Ealges Fall in Tight Battle Against the Broncos

4/25/2015 6:53:00 PM | Softball

Sophomore Taylor Wagner had two hits and an RBI for the Green and White

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell in an in-state Mid-American Conference match up to the Broncos of Western Michigan University Saturday, April 25, 3-2.

In a battle of the pitching staffs, the Eagles (15-28, 4-10 MAC) notched just four hits, two of which came from sophomore catcher Taylor Wagner. The sophomore lined two hits on the day and brought in one run for the Green and White, while Abi Clark and Michelle Kriegshauser nabbed one hit apiece. Senior Lindsay Rich (9-18) suffered the loss in the circle, tossing six innings and giving up just five hits, while striking out two and walking four.

The Broncos (19-21, 9-6 MAC) were paced by Jenny Rohn, who went 2-for-3 at the dish and drove in one run, while Marlee Wilson brought in two runs for WMU with a home run. Allyson Kus (8-7) picked up the win in the circle for Western, pitching all seven innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Eastern capitalized on a lead off walk to Haley Hostetler with the freshman shortstop stealing second and advancing to third on a fly ball to right field. With Hostetler 60 ft. from home, Clark laced a single through the left side of the field to give the Green and White the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

After keep Western scoreless through the first two innings of the contest, a single up the middle followed by a walk put runners in scoring position for Rohn, who singled through the right side of the field, knotting the score at 1-1.

WMU took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a Kelsea Cichocki double down the left field line before Wilson belted a two-out two-run home run over the left center field wall.

EMU used a Bronco miscue to lead off the top of the sixth inning and a wild pitch to advance pinch runner Angel Schilke into scoring position for the Green and White. Schilke moved to third when Rich grounded out to the opposite side of the field. With one strike, Wagner laid down a perfect suicide squeeze, allowing Schilke to score the unearned run and bringing the Eagles within one of Western. With Wagner on second and only one out, the Green and White looked to tie the game, but Western Michigan quickly retired the final two batters of the inning to carry the 3-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

Eastern was retired in order in the seventh, falling to its in-state competition, 3-2.

The Eagles will seek to even the series Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
