The Eagles fell 5-3 in game one and 5-2 in game two in DeKalb
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by the Huskies of Northern Illinois University Friday, April 25. The Eagles (15-27, 4-9 MAC) dropped game one of the Mid-American Conference, 5-3, before falling 5-2 in game two to the Huskies (26-19, 10-5 MAC).
EMU was led by three players who notched two hits on the afternoon, including Lindsay Rich who brought in two runs for the Green and White on a triple in game two. Senior Jenn Lucas and sophomore Taylor Wagner also notched a hit apiece in both games, while freshmen Haley Hostetler and Brandice Olmos brought in a run each for the Eagles. Freshman Trisha Trujillo suffered the loss in game one, while Rich (9-17) tallied the loss in game two.
The Huskies tallied six hits in game one with Emily Naegele going 2-for-3 with one RBI. In game two, Kayti Grable launched two home runs and bringing in three RBI. Three other NIU players had multi-hit contests, while Naegele finished her day 3-for-7 at the dish. Keegan Hayes picked up her 13th win in the circle, tossing all seven innings in game one, while Jessica Sturm grabbed the win in game two.
Game One: Northern Illinois 5, Eastern Michigan 3
The Huskies were the first to strike in the bottom of the first inning, putting runners in scoring position on a leadoff walk and a hit batter. A single from Bekah Harnish brought in one run, while Grable crossed the plate on an unearned run due to an EMU miscue, allowing NIU to take the 2-0 lead over Eastern.
The Green and White answered back in the top of the second inning when Abby Davidson hit a two-out single to the short stop and came around to score on an Olmos double in the left center gap. Elaine Whitbeck followed the double with a walk before Hostetler laced a single to center field, scoring Olmos and knotting the score at 2-2. The Eagles took the lead when an error by the Northern Illinois catcher allowed Whitbeck to touch home.
Back-to-back homers in the bottom half of the second put control back into the hands of the Huskies as the Eagles trailed 4-3, forcing an EMU pitching change. The Huskies put together a two-out rally of their own in the fifth inning when Grable singled deep in the hole at shortstop and Naegele drove her in on a triple through the center field game, extending the NIU lead to 5-3.
Eastern was unable to push any further runs across the plate, falling 5-3 in game one.
Game Two: Northern Illinois 5, Eastern Michigan 2
In game two the Huskies were the first to light up the scoreboard when an early error in the bottom of the first came around to score on a groundout to the right side of the field. Northern Illinois took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a Strum triple down the right field line and touched home on a Allyson Hecht single to right center field.
Grable extended the NIU lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning when she homered over the left field wall, while a second round-tripper for Grable gave Northern Illinois a 4-0 advantage over EMU in the fifth inning,
The Eagles found some offense in the top of the sixth inning with a hit batter and a Michelle Kriegshauser double to left field. Rich pushed the Green and White's runs across the plate when she tripled through the right center game, bringing EMU within two, 4-2.
The Huskies brought in one run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead into the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter Katy Wyman led off the seventh with a single and advanced to third on an NIU miscue, but the Huskies recorded the final out they needed to pick up the series sweep.
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, April 25 when they head to Kalamazoo, Mich. to match up against the Broncos of Western Michigan University. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
