YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team picked up two victories over Ball State University at Oestrike Stadium Saturday, April 18.  The Eagles (16-24, 6-9 MAC) defeated the defending MAC Regular Season Champion Cardinals (24-14, 9-6 MAC) by a final score of 8-4 in the first game before claiming the nightcap, 9-8.

Eastern Michigan returns to the diamond next weekend, April 24-26, as the Eagles travel to DeKalb, Ill. for a three-game MAC series against Northern Illinois University.  First pitch for the series opener on Friday, April 24, is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT at Ralph McKinzie Field.

GAME 1 – Eastern Michigan 8, Ball State 4

Eastern Michigan collected 12 hits in the first game, led by a career-high four hits and four RBI from Michael MioduszewskiJohn Rubino and David Lett recorded a pair of hits in the contest, while Austin Wilson, Rubino, and Jordan Peterson scored two runs for the Green and White.

Senior Ryan Lavoie picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles.  Lavoie (2-4) gave up four runs on 11 hits in six innings pitched.  Sophomore Matthew Beaton was credited with his second save of the season after tossing a scoreless final three innings, allowing just one hit for Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde.

Following a first inning run from the Cardinals, the Eagles plated a pair of runs to grab a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.  Mioduszewski singled through the right side to bring in Peterson for the Eagles' first run of the contest while a double play ball off the bat of Adam Dennison scored Tony DiLeo who reached on a hit by pitch earlier in the inning.

EMU held onto the one-run lead until the top of the fifth, when Ball State knotted the score at two runs apiece as Alex Call came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Elbert Devarie.  The Cardinals then regained the lead for the first time since the opening frame, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.

The Green and White plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth, however, to take the lead once again, 5-4.  Peterson reached on a throwing error from the shortstop, scoring Wilson from third and Rubino was able to come all the way around from second on the play to tie the game at four.  Mioduszewski then singled to shortstop in the next at-bat to score Peterson after he advanced 90-feet to third base on a wild pitch.

Eastern tacked on three more runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead out to 8-4.  Rubino's RBI fielder's choice scored Lett who singled to begin the inning, while Mioduszewski's fourth hit of the day brought in Wilson and Rubino to push the lead out to four.

Beaton closed out the 8-4 victory in game one for the Eagles, as the right-hander kept the Cardinals off the board in the final three innings.

GAME 2 – Eastern Michigan 9, Ball State 8

The bats remained hot in the nightcap, as the Eagles recorded 13  hits led by a 3-for-5 performance from Peterson.  Montgomery went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while McGeein, Mioduszewski, and Wilson all drove in a pair of runs for the Green and White.  Rubino extended his hitting streak to eight games after picking up a base hit in the second inning.

Sophomore Sam Delaplane picked up the victory in relief.  Delaplane (4-1) gave up just one hit in 3.2 innings while striking out a career and team-high eight batters.  The San Jose, Calif. native extended his scoreless streak to 13.1 innings.

The Eagles answered a pair of first inning runs for the Cardinals, by putting up four runs on four hits and benefiting from two BSU errors.  McGeein doubled home Peterson and Rubino to tie the game at two runs.  Back-to-back singles from Dennison and Brennan Williams brought in McGeein and John Montgomery to put two more on the board and give EMU a 4-2 advantage.

Ball State scored one run in the second and then put up two more in the third inning to regain the lead, 5-4.  The Cardinals added another run on a wild pitch in the fourth to push their lead out to two, 6-4.

After being held scoreless for three innings, the Green and White cut into the BSU lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run contest, 6-5.  Lett came around to score on a double steal after singling to right field earlier in the inning.

The Eagles took advantage of a failed pickoff attempt in the fifth inning, as Montgomery moved all the way up to third after walking to begin the frame.  Miodueszewski then brought in Montgomery with a sacrifice fly to knot the score at 6-6.

BSU regained the lead after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth on a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly to take an 8-6 lead.

The Eagles scored three runs all with two-outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead.  Montgomery's double to right field got the rally started, as the sophomore then came around to score on a Mioduszewski single to right.  A DiLeo single and Jackson Martin walked loaded the bases for Wilson.  Wilson delivered with a two-run single to centerfield to bring in Mioduszewski and DiLeo to give the Eagles a one-run lead.

Delaplane closed the door the Eagles to preserve the victory as the sophomore pitched a scoreless final 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
