Land’s Complete Game Shutout Leads Eagles Past Northern Illinois

4/24/2015 6:39:00 PM | Baseball

The shutout was the first for EMU since March 9, 2013 against Cincinnati

DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind Charlie Land's first career complete game, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team blanked Northern Illinois University by a final score of 8-0 in the first game of a three-game Mid-American Conference series Friday afternoon, April 24, at Ralph McKinzie Field.  The victory is the third-straight for EMU and improves the Eagles to 17-24 overall and 7-9 in MAC play.  NIU drops to 15-26 on the season and 5-11 in conference action with the defeat.

Mitchell McGeein led the Eagles offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.  McGeein recorded a double, triple, and homer in the game to finish just a single shy of the cycle.  John Rubino extended his hitting streak to nine straight games, finishing 2-for-5 at the dish with an RBI and run scored.  Michael Mioduszewski and Adam Dennison each recorded a hit with a pair of runs scored, while freshman David Lett also recorded a base knock and drove in two runs for the Green and White.

Land (3-6) was dominant all game for the Eagles, allowing just six Huskies to reach base.  The senior gave up four hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch while striking out four in the complete game shutout.  It was the first time Eastern has shutout an opponent since the 2013 season when the Eagles recorded a 3-0 victory over the University of Cincinnati, March 9.

After the teams went scoreless in the opening frame, the Green and White got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second and a single run in the third.  Mioduszewski came around to score the first run of the game on a wild pitch after singling and advancing to third base on a fielding error from the right fielder to lead off the second inning.  Lett brought in Dennison with an RBI groundout in the second, while McGeein's first career triple in the third inning scored Rubino to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.

Eastern's offense continued to click in the fourth inning, plating two more runs on two hits to push its advantage to 5-0.  Austin Wilson executed a suicide squeeze to bring in Dennison who singled to open the inning.  Rubino's second single of the contest in the following at-bat scored Jackson Martin to give the visitors a five-run lead.

Lett's two-out RBI infield single in the fifth put the Eagles on the board once again.  Jordan Peterson touched home after reaching base on a hit by pitch to put the Green and White on top 6-0.  McGeein's lead-leading 10th home run in the sixth inning made it the fifth straight inning EMU scored.  Eastern tacked-on another run in the sixth as Mioduszewski scooted home on a wild pitch after reaching on a hit by pitch earlier in the inning to give the Eagles an 8-0 lead.

Land continued to deal throughout the contest, retiring 13-straight batters at one point.  The Wheat Ridge, Colo. native did not allow a base runner in the fifth through eighth innings.  After allowing a pair of singles in the bottom of the ninth, Land got a 6-4-3 double play to finish the complete game shutout and preserve the 8-0 victory for the Eagles.

The Eagles will look to make it three-straight victories over the Huskies Saturday afternoon, April 24, as the two teams continue the Mid-American Conference series.  First pitch for the second game of the weekend series is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at Ralph McKinzie Field.
