DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a pair of Mid-American Conference contests to Northern Illinois University Sunday afternoon, April 26. The Eagles (17-26, 7-11 MAC) fell 4-3 in extra innings to the Huskies (17-26, 7-11 MAC) in game one before dropping the second half of the twinbill, 12-3, at Ralph McKinzie Field.
Eastern Michigan returns to the diamond Wednesday afternoon, April 29, when the Eagles travel to East Lansing for a matchup with Michigan State University. First pitch against the Spartans is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. at McLane Baseball Stadium at Kobs Field.
GAME 1 – Northern Illinois 4, Eastern Michigan 3 (F/10)
The Eagles collected seven hits in game one with John Rubino and Michael Mioduszewski each recording a pair of hits for the Green and White. John Montgomery, Adam Dennison, and Brennan Williams also reached base via a base knock while Montgomery and Mitchell McGeein drove in a run. Sophomore Sam Delaplane (4-2) suffered the loss in relief, giving up one run on one hit in one inning pitched. Ryan Lavoie got the start on the hill for EMU, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in 6.1 innings while striking out three.
After the teams went scoreless in the opening two frames, the Eagles got on the board with two runs in the top of the third. Following a one-out walk to Jordan Peterson, Rubino singled through the left side advancing Peterson to third base. McGeein then drove a fly ball into left field deep enough to score Peterson for the first run of the game. Montgomery kept the rally alive with an RBI single, scoring Rubino who moved up 90-feet on a stolen base and then advanced to third on the sacrifice fly to put the Eagles up 2-0.
The Huskies answered, however, in the bottom of the third as Johnny Zubek's two-run homer knotted the score at two apiece. NIU grabbed its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Micah McCulloch to make the score 3-2.
The Eagles entered the ninth inning down a run after being held scoreless for five-straight innings. A leadoff single and stolen base from Williams got things going for the Green and White in the ninth. Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde sent pinch hitter, Danny Kerr up to the plate. Kerr and Eastern benefited from a pair of Northern Illinois errors in the at-bat as Kerr reached on an error from the second baseman and then a fielding error from the right fielder allowed Williams to come all the way around from second base to tie the game, 3-3.
NIU got out of the top of the ninth allowing just the one run and had a chance to win the game in the bottom half. Following a leadoff single, Delaplane entered the contest and recorded the final three outs to send the game to extra innings.
Following a 1-2-3 inning from the Eagles in the top of the 10th, the Huskies loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half. A fielder's choice off the bat of Jason Gasser scored Justin Fletcher for the winning run to record the walk-off 4-3 victory for the Huskies in game one.
GAME 2 – Northern Illinois 12, Eastern Michigan 3
EMU had seven different players record a hit in the nightcap. Rubino's sixth inning single extended his hitting streak to 11-straight games and also extended his reached base streak to a career-high 18 games. McGeein recorded his 12th multiple hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-4 at the dish with one RBI. Williams knocked in a run as well, while Montgomery, David Lett, and Luke DeVenney each scored a run for the Eagles.
Senior Jake Andrews was saddled with the loss after making his first start since April 11 at Central Michigan. Andrews (2-4) lasted 3.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out a pair.
NIU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game two, taking advantage of an Eagle error to plate the first two runs of the game.
William's RBI single in the top of the second put the Green and White on the board to cut its deficit down to one, 2-1. Montgomery came around to score after reaching base on a single through the right side to lead off the inning.
The Huskies broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, as the home team sent 12 men to the plate to score seven runs on five hits and four walks to take a 9-1 advantage. NIU tacked-on another run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to push its lead out to 10-1.
EMU put its second run on the board in the top of the sixth to make the score 10-2. McGeein's RBI double down the left field line scored Lett who reached on an error to begin the frame.
Northern Illinois added a solo run in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 12-2 lead into the final inning. Following two quick outs, DeVenney walked to keep the game going. The freshman then stole his second base of the season, and came around to score from second base on a wild pitch to make the score 12-3. That is what the final would end up, as the Huskies recorded the final out of the contest.
