Jordan Peterson and John Rubio each recorded three hits in the loss
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team traveled to East Lansing looking for its second-straight victory over Michigan State University Wednesday afternoon, April 29, at McLane Baseball Stadium. However, the Spartans (27-17) used six-run and five-run innings to pull away from the Eagles (17-27) by a final score of 13-4 and win their eighth game in the last nine.
Eastern collected eight hits in the contest, led by three-hit performances from Jordan Peterson and John Rubino. Rubino's first inning single extended the senior's hitting streak to 12 straight games while also extending his reached base streak to 19 games. The three hits give Rubino 13 multiple hit games this season which is a team-high. Michael Mioduszewski and Adam Dennison reached base via a base knock as well for the Eagles. Junior Mitchell McGeein did not record a hit, but extended his reached base streak to 19 games while also recording his team-best 31st RBI.
Freshman Brent Mattson was saddled with the loss in his fourth start of the season. Mattson (1-2) gave up seven runs on eight hits in just 2.1 innings pitched. Michael Marsinek and Austin Wilson each had scoreless appearances out of the bullpen for the Eagles and Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde, who returned to East Lansing for the first time since departing MSU to become the bench-boss at EMU last summer. Freshman lefty Keegan Baar recorded his first collegiate victory for the Spartans. Baar (1-0) did not allow a run on five hits in six innings while recording three strikeouts.
The Spartans got out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mark Weist's RBI double to left field plated Ryan Krill who tripled in the at-bat before to score the opening run of the game.
Michigan State sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the third, adding six runs on seven hits to extend its lead to 7-0. Four-straight hits, including a pair of doubles, got things going for the Spartans in the frame. Brandon Hughes and Anthony Cheky each delivered two-run singles in the frame for the home club.
The Eagles cut the Spartan lead in half with a four-run inning on three hits in the top of the seventh. The rally started with Jackson Martin reaching on an error from the third baseman and moving up 90-feet on a David Lett hit by a pitch. Peterson then put the Green and White on the board with an RBI single through the left side to plate Martin. Following another single from Rubino, McGeein sent a fly ball into center field deep enough to bring in Lett to make it an 8-2 game. A looping single in the ensuing at-bat from Mioduszewski brought in Peterson for the third run. The Eagles took advantage of MSU's second error of the inning on the play, as the right fielder tried to throw out Rubino advancing to third but the ball got away from the third baseman allowing the senior to scoot home to make it a four-run contest, 8-4.
MSU answered the four-run seventh with five runs themselves in the bottom half. Kory Young delivered the big hit in the frame with a three-run double as the Spartans pushed their advantage out to nine runs, 13-4.
The Eagles were held scoreless in the final two innings as the Spartans were able to avenge an earlier season loss to Eastern with 13-4 victory.
Eastern Michigan returns to Mid-American Conference action this weekend when the Eagles travel to Oxford, Ohio, for a three-game series against Miami University. The series is scheduled begin Friday, May 1, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
