GENEVA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team started off the 2015 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships off with a pair of strong relay times to hold a second-place standing with 68 points, behind only reigning MAC champion Missouri State's 80-point tally. Trailing EMU are Southern Illinois (64), Buffalo (60), Miami (56), Evansville (50), and Ball State (26).
In the opening relay, Eastern's 200 medley relay lineup of Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson), Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community), Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet), and Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) touched in at 1:28.61, edging out Southern Illinois' relay team by a slim seven-hundredths of a second and breaking the EMU varsity record in the process. Winning the race was Missouri State, which set a new MAC record in 1:26.79.
The Bears went on to win the 800 free relay as well in another record-breaking mark of 6:28.05. The Green and White put on another fantastic performance in another EMU record of 6:30.39, which would have also broken the previous MAC standard by over a quarter of a second. In the relay, Gissen and Moore teamed up with Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) and Sean Tento (Seattle, Wash.-O'Dea) to claim the runner-up finish, this time besting SIU by a more comfortable margin of nearly a second. Additionally, Henry's lead off split of 1:35.95 breaks the EMU program standard in the 200 free, as he is the first ever Eagle to swim below the 1:36.00 mark.
The MAC Championships will continue tomorrow, March 5, with preliminary heats of the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free at 11 a.m. with the 1-meter diving prelims beginning at 1 p.m. The championship heats for the swims, as well as the finals for the 1-meter dive and the 200 free relay, will start at 7 p.m. Live results and video streaming can be found through mac-sports.com.
