GENEVA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team took over the lead at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships, pacing the field with 266.5 points. Trailing the Eagles are Missouri State (236), Southern Illinois (219), Miami (189), Buffalo (185.5), Evansville (76), and Ball State (42).

In the preliminary heats of the 500 free, the Green and White qualified three swimmers to the championship heat as well as a pair of student-athletes to the consolation final.  Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.-Homeschool) earned the top seed in the final heat with a personal-best time of 4:26.60, and followed it up in the finals in 4:26.02 to finish third overall and moving up to seventh on EMU's all-time performance list.  Also qualifying with Lichtenberg were Franco Petrone (Etobicoke, Ontario-Silverthorne Collegiate Institute) and Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Ogolnoksztalcace #4), who finished fifth and eighth, respectively.  Petrone touched in just three seconds off his career record in 427.33, while Rzyski set a personal best in the prelims in 4:29.19.

The Eagles also saw Sean Tento (Seattle, Wash.-O'Dea) and Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz Secondary) in the consolation final for the 500 free.  Tento earned the top seed in the heat with a prelims time of 4:31.01 and made nearly a three-second improvement to touch in at 4:28.14 for 10th and just miss out on a spot on Eastern's top-10 list.  Gilski also cut significant time in the finals, placing 13th in 4:35.85.

The 200 IM saw fewer qualifiers to the championship and consolation heats, but the caliber of the performances put on were laudable.  Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) earned the third seed in a personal record of 1:47.06 to remain in his second spot in EMU laurels, and went on to claim bronze in 1:46.70 for an NCAA consideration mark.  The pair of Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) and Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community) appeared in the B final, and punched out a 1-2 finish with Bateman leading the way in an NCAA consideration time of 1:48.88.  The time is a personal record of more than two seconds, and moves Bateman up to the fourth-fastest performance in the event in program history.  Aerne also earned a spot on the coveted list, finishing 10th overall in 1:50.87, which ranks ninth all-time.

The Eagles continued to rewrite the record book in the 50 free with a breakout performance by Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek).  The senior, who had just recently added the event as part of his regular slate this season, shaved over three quarters of a second to touch in at 20.04 seconds in the prelims.  Moore's mark stands as the second-fastest in EMU history, behind only the prodigious mark of 19.57 by Derick Roe.  Eastern also had Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) appear in the consolation final with solid swims at 20.73 seconds in the prelims and a final swim of 20.79 to finish 12th overall.

In the final individual event of the day, the Green and White was heavily represented in the 1-meter dive.  Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic) led the way with a bronze finish with 344.35 points after posting a career-best 384.10 points in the prelims. Right behind Chan was Dan Gironza (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) with 337.00 points for fourth place, while Dakoda Johnson (Greenwood, Ind.-Center Grove) posted 327.30 points for fifth and Sage Stephens (Warren, Ill.-Warren) amassed 307.20 points for seventh.  In the consolation final for the 1-meter dive, Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Central) finished 13th overall with 283.65 points while Matt Ventura (Lakewood, Ohio-St. Edward) garnered a 15th-place finish with 271.65 points.

The Eagles wrapped up the day with the 200 free relay, in which Henry, Gissen, Moore, and Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) touched in at 1:20.32 to finish fourth.  The time is the fastest since at least the 2007-08 season when Ethan Crabtree, Mike Rowland, Andrzej Olesinski, and Roe clocked a 1:20.37 at the MAC/SunBelt Championship meet, Feb. 28-March 1.

Eastern will look to hold on to its lead tomorrow, March 6, as it continues with the prelims and finals for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 3-meter diving will be contested.  Prelims will begin at 11 a.m. with finals starting at 7 p.m. in addition to the 400 medley relay.  The championship final for the 3-meter dive will be held Saturday, March 7, with consolation finals for the 3-meter dive prior to tomorrow's relay.  Live results and video streaming will be provided through mac-sports.com.
