PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team completed its first official races of the 2015 season, racing three boats in the 33rd Annual Murphy Cup, hosted by the University of Tulsa Saturday, March 28.
"We got some good racing in today," stated Head Coach Kemp Savage. "The novice boat keeps getting faster. I was also very happy with the Varsity 8+ until they had an equipment breakage in the last half of the race. The Varsity 4 also rowed well. I am really excited to see the speed we are going to generate once we get on our home water."
The Eagles Varsity 4+ boat nabbed victories over Holy Cross and Bryn Mawr, crossing the line at 8:37.41. The finish was just 10 seconds behind the Penn State team. The Green and White cut almost an entire minute off of their time in the month of March in the 2014 season and are just 20 seconds off of their finish at the 2014 CAA Championships in the event.
In the Novice 8 race, EMU placed third overall with a time of 8:10.10 which is right on pace with its times in the 2014 campaign. The race marked the first official collegiate race for the entire boat, while some competed in the fall for the Green and White.
Finally, the Varsity 8 team posted a time of 7:33.63 in its first official race of the 2015 season, which is a mere 20 seconds off its time at the CAA Championships in 2014.
The Eagles will be back in action April 11 when they travel to Spring Lake, Mich. for the Lubbers Cup, hosted by Grand Valley State University.
