The Eagles were unable to defeat Georgia State or UMKC on the second day of the tournament

LAWRENCE, Kan. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was unable to pick up a win on day two of the Kansas Tournament, falling to both Georgia State and UMKC Saturday, March 21.

Game One: Georgia State 9, Eastern Michigan 3

Sophomore Katy Wyman led the EMU offense in game one going 2-for-3 at the dish with two RBI, while Taylor Wagner brought in one run on one hit for the Green and White. In the circle, senior Lindsay Rich suffered the loss, going 2.2 innings with one strikeout, while Alyssa Huntley closed out the contest, tossing 3.1 innings.

Georgia State was led by Kensey Caldwell who brought in three RBI, while Ivie Drake went 2-for-2 at the plate, brought in one run and scored twice for the Panthers. Junior Katie Worley recorded her second victory over Eastern Michigan this season, pitching a complete game, giving up just five hits and striking out six.

Georgia State took the first lead of the contest when it put runners on first and second before a hard hit single up the middle brought in a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers went up 2-0 over Eastern Michigan when a one-out error plated the runner from third base before the Eagles secured the final two outs of the inning.

As has been the story of the weekend of the Green and White, EMU responded in the top of the second with a leadoff single from Abi Clark. With pinch runner Angel Schilke on second after a groundout, Wyman stepped up to the dish and launched a two-run homer over the left center field wall to knot the game at 2-2.

A walk and a single for the Panthers in the bottom of the third inning put runners on the basepath for Caldwell who ripped the second home run of the game to give GSU its second lead of the contest, 5-2. Sophomore Mandy Blackwell followed up the three-run round homer with a solo round-tripper of her own to extend the Georgia State lead to 6-2.

With two out in the top of the fourth inning, sophomore Taylor Wagner belted the fourth home run of the contest over the left field fence to bring EMU within three of the Panthers.

GSU tacked on one run in the bottom of the fourth before adding two final runs off a homerun and a double in the sixth inning to secure a 9-3 victory over the Green and White.

Game Two: UMKC 9, Eastern Michigan 4

The Eagles executed on what would prove to be a costly error for the 'Roos in game two when Haley Hostetler reached on an error and advanced to second on a grounder to third base. After moving to third with a steal, Hostetler touched home on a single from Jenn Lucas through the left side of the field to put EMU up 1-0.

After a scoreless two innings for UMKC, it broke open the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning, taking a three run lead with four runs on four hits, including two singles and two doubles.

Junior Abi Clark started the offense for Eastern in the top of the fourth inning, reaching first on a bunt single before Schilke came in to pinch run. Schilke advanced to second on a groundout to the shortstop, and moved 60 ft. from home on a Wyman single to left field. The Green and White's lone run of the inning came in when Davidson lined a single to the pitcher to score Schilke from third and bring EMU within two of UMKC.

The 'Roos extended their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, using three runs on two hits and one EMU error. A walk to leadoff the inning put a runner on for UMKC before a one-out single moved runners into scoring position. The Eagles recorded the second out of the inning, but were unable to get the third out when Caitlin Christopher reached on an infield error to plate one run. The error was followed up by a single to plate two unearned runs for the 'Roos, allowing them to take a comfortable 7-2 lead into the fifth inning.

Eastern Michigan cut the UMKC lead to three in the top of the inning when back-to-back solo homers from Hostetler and Kriegshauser sored two runs for the Green and White. After a pitching change, the 'Roos sat down the Eagles in order to close out the inning before any further damage was done.

UMKC used runs in both the fifth and sixth to extend its lead to 9-4, while Eastern Michigan was unable to string anything together, falling in its second game of the day.

In the circle, starting pitcher Trisha Trujillo suffered the loss tossing 2.2 innings, and Rich closed out the game for Eastern, going 3.1 innings. For UMKC, Cinda Ramos notched the win pitching four innings.

The Eagles will close out its final tournament of the 2015 season Sunday, March 22 when it has a rematch game with UMKC. The single game contest is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
