LAWRENCE, Kan. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team closed out the 2015 Kansas Tournament Sunday, March 22, falling to UMKC, 7-2.
The Eagles (7-15) used four hits from four different players to score two runs, while Katy Wyman and Abby Davidson each drove in an RBI for the Green and White. Starting pitcher Lindsay Rich suffered the loss in the circle, managing just one out and gave up five runs, while Alyssa Huntley closed out the game, hurling 6.2 innings and giving up just two hits, while striking out five.
UMKC (15-14) used nine hits to score seven runs, including multi-hit games from Kelsey Goodwin and Alexandra Friloux, who nabbed two hits and two RBI apiece. Freshman Amber Grove had a successful outing in the circle against the Green and White, pitching a complete game and giving up just four hits while fanning nine.
UMKC woke its bats up early against EMU, going through its entire lineup to score five runs in the top of the first inning to get out to the early lead over the Green and White. The 'Roos used seven hits and left bases loaded before Eastern was able to retire the final out it needed to close out the inning.
The Eagle offense could not string anything together, sitting down in order for the next three innings, while UMKC found more offense in the top of the fifth inning to extend its lead to 7-0. The 'Roos put a runner on base with an Eastern error and a single to right field from Goodwin, which moved runners into scoring position with no outs. A deep sacrifice fly to right field brought in the first run of the inning, with a second sacrifice fly to center field scoring the second run. The Eagles grabbed a third out with a strikeout from Huntley before any further runs were scored to avoid the mercy.
Duffy started the Green and White offense in the bottom half of the inning with a lead off single through the right side of the field, allowing Angel Schilke to come in and pinch run. With a runner on first, Abi Clark was hit by a pitch to secure two base runners for the Eagles, while Davidson moved Schilke 60 ft. from home on a fielder's choice. Wyman, who has been clutch all weekend for the Eagles, dug in and laced a double to the left field wall bringing in Eastern's first run of the afternoon.
The Eagles were able to push one final run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with a Taylor Wagner leadoff double to left field and a Davidson slow roller to second base that would bring in Wagner from third base. EMU was unable to bring in any final runs, falling to UMKC 7-2.
Eastern Michigan will return to the Great Lakes State to take on the University of Detroit in a road contest Wednesday, March 25. The doubleheader is slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
