Softball Splits Doubleheader with ETSU

3/15/2015 10:20:00 PM | Softball

The Eagles came back to win game two in eight innings over the Buccaneers

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split with East Tennessee State University in a doubleheader Sunday, March 15.

Between the two games, there were seven home runs, while the Eagles (6-9) out-hit ETSU 13-6 in the second game. EMU was led by Haley Hostetler and Michelle Kriegshauser, who each had three hits in game two, driving in three and two RBI, respectively. Senior Jenn Lucas also had three hits on the day, going 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, while Aoife Duffy went 2-for-3 with two RBI in game one.

In the circle, senior Lindsay Rich (5-7) suffered the loss in game one, going 3.2 innings, while Abbie Minsker and Alyssa Huntley closed out the game for the Green and White. Freshman Trisha Trujillo (1-2) went the distance in game two, tossing all eight innings, including a perfect 3.1 innings to start the contest with three strikeouts. The win marked the first of the freshman's collegiate career and the second complete game.

Game One: ETSU 14, Eastern Michigan 4 (5 inn.)

The Buccaneers got their bats going early in game one, using back-to-back two-out homers, including a grand slam, to take a quick 5-0 lead over the Green and White in the bottom of the first inning, forcing Head Coach Melissa Gentile to switch pitchers early in the contest. With Minsker on in relief, the sophomore walked two batters before loading the bases on a single with two outs. ETSU was able to push one final run across the plate in the bottom of the first when Alex Everett picked up the fifth walk of the inning, extending the Buccaneer lead to 6-0.

East Tennessee State added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning as the Eagle pitchers continued to struggle. Rich came back in after Minsker hit the first batter of the inning before walking the third. With runners on first and second, Rich gave up a single to left field to load the bases before Kelsey Smith hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field to score one runner. Following the sacrifice fly, Kelsey Chernak singled to left field, allowing the Bucs to take an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Eastern Michigan lit up the scoreboard for the first time in the contest in the top of the fourth inning when Duffy singled to left field and pinch runner Angel Schilke advanced to second on a Lucas single up the middle. With bases load, following a second-straight single from Abby Davidson, Rich laced a single to the shortstop, allowing Schilke to touch home. The Eagles brought in one more run in the inning when Katy Wyman hit a deep ball to center field that would score Lucas from third base.

ETSU responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on three more runs on four hits, including a third homer, to take the 11-2 lead into the top of the fifth inning.

With the mercy on the line, the Eagles added two final runs to their tally when Duffy ripped a two-run homer over the right field fence, but the runs were not enough as ETSU used one final round-tripper which scored three more runs that would allow the Bucs to take the 14-4 mercy win over EMU.

Game Two: Eastern Michigan 7, ETSU 4 (8 inn.)

The Eagles would be the first to get on the scoreboard in game two as Kriegshauser launched a lead-off home run in the top of the fourth inning which would allow EMU to take the 1-0 lead.

Much like the first game, the Buccaneers responded in the bottom half of the inning as a walk and hit batter put runners in scoring position before Casey Homer doubled to right center, scoring one run and knotting the score at 1-1.

With the score tied at 1-1, the game was forced into extra innings. The Eagle offense came up big in the top of the eighth inning when Schilke was placed on second for international tiebreaker rules and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lucas.

A single from Davidson through the left side of the field scored Schilke before a double to the opposite field from Wyman allowed Davidson to cross home. Sophomore Taylor Wagner pinch hit for the Eagles and laced a single through the right side that would force an ETSU pitching change with one out.

The pitching change proved to be in vain as freshman Hostetler ripped a three-run home run over the left center field wall to extend the Green and White lead to 6-1. EMU used one final hit, a double from Kriegshauser, to score a seventh run and take a comfortable 7-1 lead with just the bottom half of the inning to play.

With a runner on second in the bottom of the inning, Smith knocked a two-run homer over the wall before the Bucs put runners on first and second with two-straight hits. With only one out, Horner hit a deep sac fly to bring in one final run for ETSU, but the Eagles were able to get the final out they needed in order to secure a road victory.

Eastern Michigan will play its first games in Ypsilanti Wednesday, March 18, when they take on North Dakota. The doubleheader will mark the second time this season that the Eagles and UND will square off. North Dakota holds a 1-0 advantage over the Eagles, while the all-time series is tied at 1-1 with an EMU victory in the 2014 campaign. First pitch in the EMU home opener is slated for 12 p.m.
