EMU Softball Falls to FGCU on Final Day of USF Under Armour Tournament

The Eagles second game of the day against Illinois was cancelled due to travel curfew

TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team had an unusual final day at the USF Under Armour Tournanment, first dropping game one to Florida Gulf Coast, 9-0, before having its second game against the University of Illinois cancelled in the middle of the fifth inning due to travel curfew.

Game One: Floriday Gulf Coast 9, Eastern Michigan 0

FGCU got out to the hot start in the top of the first inning when Kelsey Huff reached base on a bunt single before coming around to score on a Kelsey Capenter single through the left side of the field. The Eagles tacked on their second run of the innings whena hit batter put runners on first and second before a wild pitch moved them into scoring position. Following the wild pitch, Alexis Ross hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Carpenter to touch home and extend the FGCU lead to 2-0.

Eastern looked to get some offense going in the bottom of the second inning when Jenn Lucas singled up the middle and Katy Wyman reached on an error with only one out, but Florida Gulf Coast was able to retire the final two outs of the inning before EMU was able to do any damage.

FGCU added a third run in the top fo the third inning when Carpenter brough in her second RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Eagles continued to push the pace offensively in the top of the fifth innings, tacking on four runs on four hits to extend their lead to 7-0 with two innings left to play.

Florida Gulf Coast used two more runs on three hits and one Green and White error in the top of the seventh inning to go on to a 9-0 win after retiring the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning.
 
Eastern Michigan softball will be back in action Friday, March 13 when it heads to Stony Brook, N.Y. for the Stony Brook Tournament. The Eagles will take on Holy Cross at 1 p.m. followed by Stony Brook at 3 p.m.
