CLEMSON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team kicked off its 2015 season, traveling to Clemson, S.C. to row against the Tigers in three 2k races Saturday, Feb. 28.
Each race was a rolling start at a rate cap of a max 26 strokes per minute. "It's always good to race fast competition at the beginning of the year," said Head Coach Kemp Savage. "It lets you get an early measure of how well your training is going. All of the boats did a great job closing the gap from last year. Any time you start the season closing the gap on an ACC rowing team, you know the athletes are pushing hard."
The Green and White improved immensely from a season ago, finishing a mere 14 seconds behind the Clemson Varsity 2 boat with a time of 8:13.89, while the Tigers Varsity 1 boat earned the first-place finish in a time of 7:46.08. Last year, the Eagles were a full 24 seconds behind the second-place boat, closing the gap by 10 seconds in the 2015 season.
In the second race of the morning, EMU was just 15 seconds behind Clemson, crossing the line at 7:44.00 and finished the day with a time of 8:07 in the third race and a 7:49.70 in the final race of the day.
The Eagles will take a month off before returning to the water Saturday, March 28 when they compete for the Murphy Cup in Pennsauken, N.J.
