The Eagles defeated Villanova before falling to Georiga State

TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split day one of the USF Under Armour Series Tournament Friday, Feb. 27. The Eagles (5-7) first defeated Villanova University for their fourth-straight win of the 2015 season, before falling to Georgia State to close out the day.

Game One: Eastern Michgian 3, Villanova 1

The Wildcats were the first to light up the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning when Natalia Sagovia led off the inning with a walk before moving into scoring position on a fielder's choice. A sacrifice fly to left field allowed Sagovia to cross home, while EMU recorded the final out of the inning when pinch runner Mackenzie Tilles attempted to advance to third on the play.

EMU answered back in the top of the sixth inning when Brandice Olmos reached first on an error by the second baseman and Myranda Barnes came in to pitch run. Sophomore Michelle Kriegshauser laced a single into left field to move Barnes just 60 feet from home, while a two-out single to right field from junior Abi Clark knotted the score at 1-1.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Haley Hostetler walked and Brandice Olmos moved her to second with a single to right field. Senior Jenn Lucas proved to be a leader for the Green and White when she dug in for her first at-bat of the contest and ripped a single down the left field line to score both Hostetler and Olmos to allow EMU to take the 3-1 advantage into the bottom of the inning.

After putting runners on first and second with no outs, senior pitcher Lindsay Rich and the rest of the EMU defense shut down the Wildcats with three-straight outs to earn the 3-1 victory.

Rich picked up her fifth win of the season, tossing her fifth complete game, while Kriegshauser went 2-for-3 at the plate and Lucas drove in two RBI for the Eagles.

Game Two: Georgia State 6, Eastern Michigan 1

The Panthers got off the to the hot start over the Eagles, scoring five runs on three hits and one Eastern Michigan error in the bottom of the first inning to take the early 5-0 advantage over EMU.

Georgia State added to their tally in the bottom of the second when it led off the inning with a hit batter before Callie Alford doubled to the center field fence to extend the Panther lead to 6-0 early in the contest.

Despite the Eagles' best effort, they were unable to get any offense going until the top of the seventh inning when Hostetler reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an Olmos walk. A Kriegshauser single down the right field line allowed the Green and White to score one run, but it was not enough as GSU recorded the final out of the inning to earn a 6-1 victory.

Georgia State out-hit EMU 10-5 in the contest, while four different Panthers recorded muti-hit contests. Freshman Trisha Trujillo suffered the loss in the circle, hurling six innings with four strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 28 when they take on Florida Gulf Coast at 12:15 p.m.
