ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
—Eastern Michigan University's women's basketball team extended its winning streak to three thanks to a second half surge to overtake the Mid-American Conference-topping Ohio University, avenging an 82-59 loss on Jan. 14 with a 73-61 decision in Athens, Ohio.  With the victory, Eastern now holds a winning record in conference action (14-10, 7-6 MAC), while Ohio was handed just its fourth loss of the season and second MAC loss as it falls to 20-4 (11-2 MAC).

The victory marked the seventh-straight time that the Eagles have won in Athens.  Eastern was led by Cha Sweeney (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers) with 23 points, who went 3-of-5 from three-point range and dished out three assists.  Jamaica Bucknor (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Weaver (ASA College)) kept up her strong conference play with 17 points, also going 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Janay Morton (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo) came alive in the second half to chip in all 14 of her points.

As a team, the Eagles shot 22-of-54 from the field for a 40.7 percent clip, and went a blazing 20-of-21 from the free throw line for a 95.2 percent success rate, which ranks as the third-best team percentage from the charity stripe in EMU laurels.  In the second half alone, the Eagles shot 19-of-19 from the free throw line.  Additionally, Eastern shot 50 percent from three-point range, which is the best connection the Eagles have had on the long ball all season.

Ohio was led by Queira Lampkins with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Kiyanna Black added 12 points for the Bobcats.  The Bobcats shot 34.8 percent from the floor on 23-of-66 shooting, and while they made 10 three-pointers in the setback, they put up 36 shots from beyond the arc for a 27.8 percent clip.  Eastern also did not allow many trips to the charity stripe, as Ohio attempted just six free throws in the contest.

The usually hot-shooting Bobcats got out to an early lead thanks to a pair of triples from Byard, as the Eagles trailed 6-0 with 17:44 remaining in the first half.  Phillis Webb (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo) got the ball rolling for the Green and White with a layup dished out by Sweeney, but a 10-3 run by Ohio kept the Eagles down through the first eight minutes of play.

Not willing to back down, Bucknor ignited the offense with back-to-back three-pointers within a minute to bring Eastern within five points.  Eastern kept the Bobcats from scoring a field goal for more than six minutes, allowing just two points off of free throws.  In that span, the Green and White got within one point of Ohio, trailing 18-17, thanks to the inside work of Sweeney, Bucknor, and Sasha Dailey (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers).

Ohio turned back to their trusted three-point shot with a make from Black to give Ohio their first field goal in six minutes, but Sweeney answered back with two triples of her own to knot the score at 23-23 with 5:03 remaining in the half.  The teams traded baskets with similar success from three-point range.  Bucknor would score the final points of the half for the Eagles by drilling a trey, but the Bobcats held the upper hand going into the locker room at the half with a 31-28 lead.

Bucknor paced the Eagles at the half with 13 points and three rebounds, including shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.  Sweeney added 10 points fueled by a pair of triples, with the pair accounting for 23 of the team's 28 points.   As a team, Eastern shot 33.3 percent from the field, and found more success from three-point range after putting up a 45.5 percent clip on 5-of-11 shooting.  Ohio shot 39.3 percent from the field, and held the advantage on rebounding, 21-17.

Eastern opened up the second half with a much quicker pace than the first period, equalizing the score at 33-33 within two minutes thanks to a jumper by Sweeney and a three from Sera Ozelci (Ankara, Turkey-TED Ankara (Odessa CC)).  A trio of points from Ozelci gave Eastern its first lead of the contest, and Morton joined the three-point party with back-to-back triples to redirect the flow of the game in favor of the Eagles, which then held a 46-39 lead with 12:32 remaining.

Ohio continued to hit their long shots as has been their strength this season, but Eastern's offensive output stepped up to keep the Bobcats from gaining too much ground.  The Green and White also put on a solid effort from behind the charity stripe, with Rachel Kehoe (St. Clair, Mich.-St. Clair (St. Clair CC)) sinking four free throws before notching a layup to bring the count to 59-50 with 5:36 to play.

Sweeney and Morton pushed the Eagles to 65 points, leading the Bobcats by seven points with 1:23 to play.  The sophomore pair helped seal the deal with a few trips to the free throw line, as the Green and White took down the conference-leading Bobcats, 73-61, handing Ohio just its second loss of MAC play.

Eastern will return home to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center when it looks to sweep the season series against Toledo Saturday, Feb. 21.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on Eagle All-Access.
