Men's swimming and diving continues to prep for MAC Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming team completed action at the OSU Winter Invitational, Feb. 15, once again showcasing numerous personal bests from many of the Eagles.
Eastern clinched one victory on the day, with Nate Schingoethe (Itasca, Ill.-Lake Park) claiming the title in the 200 back in 1:52.26. Additionally, the Eagles had the runner-up finisher as well, with Craig Wasberg (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) touching in at 1:52.40.
Two more individual runner-up finishes went to the Green and White, as Axel Schmitter-Sanchez (Istapalapa, Mexico-Calmecac) notched a career record in 1:52.71 and Ethan McNally (Loveland, Colo.-Loveland) clocked in for a personal-best performance in the 200 IM with a mark of 1:52.49.
Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park) cut a considerable amount of time off his 50 free, taking third in 20.72 seconds. The race marks the first time that Brinkhoff has dipped below the 21-second barrier in his collegiate career, and it is also the fastest mark of the season by an Eagle. Eastern had one more athlete swim a sub-21-second time in the 50 free, as Kristian Berning (Kettering, Ohio-Kettering) touched in at 20.98 seconds in the prelims and went on to finish sixth in 21.09 seconds.
Berning paced the Eagles in the 200 free, swimming a career-best 1:40.34 for fifth place. However, the fastest mark for the team came in the prelims, when Connor Fotsch (Winnetka, Ill.-New Trier) swam a 1:39.96 but bowed out of the finals during the evening session.
Finishing up the individual events, Conner Finnigan (Indianapolis, Ind.-Warren Central) had the top time for the Eagles in the 200 breast, swimming a personal-best 2:05.10 to take fifth while McNally finished sixth in 2:05.36.
Eastern ended the meet with the 400 free relay, taking runner-up in 3:03.91 behind the lineup of Fotsch, Brinkhoff, Berning, and Kevin Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek).
The Eagles will be back in action next weekend, staying close to home when they travel to the University of Michigan for the Michigan First Chance Meet, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22. The meet will start at 11 a.m. both days.
