ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team opened their season with a huge exhibition win over the University of Michigan, Sunday, Dec. 6, at Crisler Center. The Eagles emerged victorious, 194.050 - 183.350, as the team managed to hit 25 of 27 routines on the day.
"We know that they were kind of banged up, and it showed today," explained Head Coach Jay Santos. "On the flip side, our kids did a good job, and that's what we're taking from this. We came out and our kids looked normal, comfortable, and confident when they were doing their gymnastics."
The Eagles got off to a hot start on bars, as the team went 6-for-6 and posted a number of very solid routines. Junior Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba - Kelvin) got the Green and White off to a great start, as she hit a solid routine and minimized her deductions, taking only a small step on her dismount. Sophomore Kirsten Gendron (Birch Run, Mich. - Frankenmuth) and junior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y. - Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) followed McEachern with beautiful routines of their own, as both had very good lines throughout their sets. The next three Eagles all posted scores of 9.75 with strong sets, as junior Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba - Sturgeon Heights), and sophomores Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. - Brighton) and Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) kept the momentum in favor of EMU. Each routine improved on the previous, as Conrad ended the rotation on a high note for the Eagles, sticking her double layout dismount. After the first rotation, the Green and White led the Wolverines, 48.675 - 48.550.
After notching six hits on bars, the team kept the ball rolling on vault. Senior Kimberly Ebeyer (Greenwood, Ind. - Whiteland Community) began with a nice yurcheno half, taking just a small step on the landing. The next three Eagles all performed yurchenko fulls, with junior Kelsie Brooks (Winston, Ga. - Alexander), Conrad, and McEachern all taking just a small step on their landings. Sophomore Rachel Slocum (Holly Springs, N.C. - Holly Springs) performed a different vault, as she debuted a nice handspring front pike. To close the event, freshman Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill. - Belleville) hit a powerful yurchenko full to notch a 9.65. With vault and bars completed, the Eagles clung to a 97.075 - 96.050 lead over the Maize and Blue.
Floor marked the first time that the Eagles encountered a bit of adversity. McEachern got the Eagles off to a good start, posting a 9.725 in the leadoff spot. Gervais then had a small hiccup in her routine, but the team recovered nicely. Conrad got the Eagles back on track, followed by a hit set from Gendron, which included clean and controlled tumbling throughout. In the anchor spot, Slocum opened with a beautiful double pike, as she closed out the rotation with a 9.725. After three, EMU clung to a 145.375 - 144.750 lead over U-M.
As the Wolverines were still within striking distance, the Eagles needed a strong beam rotation to close out the meet. The team delivered in a big way, as the lowest counting beam score was a 9.6. Ebeyer got the group off to a strong start, earning a 9.65. Highlighting the event was Valentin, who with her gorgeous series, came away with a 9.8 to lead the team. After the Holmdel, N.J. native's set, the next three competitors all turned in scores of 9.7 or above, as Gervais came away with a 9.7, while Rubin and Conrad earned a 9.75 and a 9.775, respectively. With a 48.675 on the event, the Eagles' final team score stood at a 194.050, which was better than last year's exhibition meet by nearly a point and a half.
The Wolverines scratched their final floor competitor, but the meet was out of reach regardless, as a 10.0 would not have put the Maize and Blue ahead of the Green and White. Last season, U-M came out on top in the exhibition meet, as the final score was 196.150 - 192.400 in favor of the Wolverines. The last time that the Eagles came away with a victory over the Maize and Blue was in 1986, when the Green and White came out on top, 175.150 - 170.600.
"We still really need to work on our execution and our scoring potential. But, for this part of the season and for it being December, we went out and did a really good job, and I'm very happy about that," remarked Santos.
The Eagles open their regular season on the road at Pittsburgh, Sunday, Jan. 10, with a quad-meet with the Panthers , Maryland, and Towson. The Green and White's first home meet, which is the 'Beauty and the Bast' meet in conjunction with the wrestling team, comes Jan. 30 against Northern Illinois at 4 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
