YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving won its fourth consecutive title in the annual EMU Invitational, Dec.4-5, handily taking the victory by a margin of almost 500 points. The Eagles finished with 1,156.5 points, followed by Wayne State (761.5), Ball State (643), Ashland (558), Tiffin (138.5) and IUPUI (91).
Junior springboard phenom Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Secondary School) got the Eagles started on the right foot, posting a score of 361.95 in the 1-meter event to claim the top spot. Not far behind, freshman Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) finished second, posting with the only other score over 300 in the field. Eastern's springboard success carried over from a strong performance in the 3-meter event in which Chan took first place while sophomore Peter Rusenas finished second.
Eastern followed up the strong showing on the springboard by claiming first and second in the 200 Medley Relay. Junior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) teamed up with seniors Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson), Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) and Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston) for a first place mark. Sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) and juniors Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes), Kevin Moore (Phoenix, Ariz.-Boulder Creek), and Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park) slighted Wayne State's top relay team to claim runner-up.
After freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and junior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.-Home School) wrapped up first and third place finishes, respectively, in the 400 Individual Medley, sophomore Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) notched a win in the 100 Butterfl after touching in with a season-best time of 49.89, Johnson was followed by Wayne State's Rasmus Olsen and EMU teammate Gissen.
Senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) made a splash in his first event of the day, taking the field by storm in the 200 Freestyle. The senior captain's time of 1:38.49 was nearly four seconds faster than the second place finisher.
Following their captain's lead, Hodges and Aerne added 37 points to the Eagles' total. Hodges claimed the top spot with a time of 56.07 while Aerne finished in second, touching in a half a second after his teammate.
Bateman and Gissen finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 Backstroke before the Eagles closed out the first half of the day in the 800 Free Relay. An equal mix of veterans and youth turned out to be the right combination for the Eagles as freshmen Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) and Kawaguchi teamed up with seniors Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary) and Henry for the victory. Sophomores Burton and Hunter Cook (Hilliard, Ohio-Hillard Darby) joined freshman Ricky Perez and Lichtenberg as the Eagles other top relay squad. Shaving nearly 20 seconds from their preliminary time, the foursome posted a time of 6:46.65.
Heading into the final session, the Eagles had distanced themselves pretty well. Sitting in first with 793 points, the Green and White were trailed by Wayne State (492) and Ball State (442).
EMU opened the last portion of the invite right where they left off, turning in first and second place performances in the 200 Free Relay. Tyson, Gissen, Crompton, and Henry won the event with a time of 1:22.22 while Johnson, Burton, Bateman, and Brinkhoff placed second.
The Green and White went on to sweep the top three slots in the 500 Free and Henry registered his seventh win of the weekend. Rzyski and Lichtenberg rounded out the top three with times of 4:35.93 and 4:37.91, respectively.
Eastern received top-notch performances from a pair of freshman in the 200 IM, adding a combined 37 points to the Eagles' total. Tyson earned the victory, touching in in 1:52.49 while Kawaguchi taking second.
After Gissen reeled in his first win of the season in the 50 Free, the Eagles closed out the competition with a one-two finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Touching in in first place, Bateman, Hodges, Tyson, and Henry turned in a pool-record of 3:16.42.
Eastern will take nearly a month's break before jumping into the pool for its next competition.
