WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - Five season-best performances by the Eagles were not enough for the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team, Friday, Jan. 15, as the Green and White fell 128-109 at the hands of Purdue University.
Senior Brendan O'Shea (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) placed third in the 3-meter dive, posting a season-best score of 294.60, for his first top-three finish of the season. Freshman Tom Gillis' (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) 298.20 performance earned third place in the 1-meter event.
After back-to-back events without a top-three finish, freshman Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) and sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) turned the tide. Placing second and third, respectively, in the 200 Butterfly, the duo turned in a pair of career-best times to add seven points to the Eagles' total.
From there, the Green and White won the next four events beginning with senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston). Henry followed up a runner-up finish in the 200 Free with a season-best time and first place rank in the 100 Free, touching in with a time of 45.07.
Junior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) gave the Eagles their second win of the day in the 200 Backstroke while senior Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden -Alvkullegymnasiet) rounded out the top three.
A one-two punch by juniors Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) and Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) in the 500 Free kept things going for the Eagles, but the Boilermakers maintained a large lead.
Senior Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) claimed the top spot in the 200 Breaststroke, completing the race in 2:02.13 before Eastern closed out the day by taking second and third in the 200 Free Relay.
Despite the late charge by the Eagles, the Boilermakers early lead gave them a 128-109 victory over the Green and White.
A quick turnaround pits the Eagles against the Cardinals of Ball State University in Mid-American Conference action, tomorrow, Jan. 16. Competition in Muncie, Ind. is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
