Eagles tie for second in the Mid-American Conference with seven selections

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team landed seven harriers on the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women's Cross Country  Academic All-MAC Team, the conference announced, Tuesday, Nov. 24. Eastern ranked second in the conference with seven selections.

The Eagles' selections for the team include: Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. - Fremont), Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. - Seaholm), Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich. - Saline), Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - Univ. of Leuven), Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison), Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran), and Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind. - Penn). This marks the third time that Frauhammer has received the honor, while Aldrich, Bentzley, Gallein, McDermitt, Mesa, and Pottschmidt are receiving the award for the first time.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for  student-athletes who have excelled both in athletics and academics. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.

McDermitt was one of the six student-athletes to have recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Davison, Mich. native participated in seven races throughout the season, highlighted by her fourth-place finish at the MAC Championships, Oct. 31. She also earned First Team All-MAC honors and All-Region honors based on her placing at both the conference championships as well as the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 13.

A senior from Gits, Belgium, Sofie Gallein ran in seven meets for the Eagles as well, including a sixth-place finish at the MAC Championships, Oct. 31, which earned her First Team All-MAC honors. Fellow senior Amy Frauhammer capped off her EMU career by running in eight races throughout the season, posting a 21st-place finish at the conference championship. Finally, Anna Aldrich participated in four races throughout the season, including a season-high time of 18:50.6 at the EMU Fall Classic, Oct. 23.

Additionally, the trio of Bentzley, Mesa, and Pottschmidt ran in multiple races as well. The Birmingham, Mich. native, Bentzley posted a fifth-place finish at the George Dales Invite, Sept. 11, as well as a season-best time of 18:12.1 at the EMU Celebration, Sept. 5. Claire Mesa ran in six meets throughout the season, highlighted by a 14th-place finish at the George Dales Invite, Sept. 5. Finally, Lauren Pottschmidt ran in six meets as well, posting a season-best time of 22:57.82 at the MAC Championship, Oct. 31.

The Eagles' season came to a close following the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 13, when they were not selected for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. However, the team had one of their most successful seasons ever, as junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) claimed the MAC individual title while the team took home their first team championship in program history.
