CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEalges.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team landed 12 student-athletes on the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Academic All-MAC Team, the conference announced, Tuesday, Nov. 24. With 12 student-athletes recognized, Eastern Michigan ranks fifth among all MAC institutions.
Making the Academic All-MAC team were: Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson), Stef Barcelos (Mississagua, Ontario-St. Marcellinus), Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London), Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy), Gabriella Mancini (Troy, Mich.-Athens), Michelle Rollins (Harland, Mich.-Hartland), Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin), Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial), Hallee Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington), Julia Lombardi (Oakville, Ontario-Queen Elizabeth Park), Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton), and Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Mich.-Prospect). Kansman, Lombardi, Oddan, Trapp and McCabe land on the team for the third time in their careers while Barcelos, Bentley, Mancini, Rollins, and Tillar are recognized for the second time in their EMU tenures. Nason appears on the list for the first time in her career.
The Academic All-MAC team replaces the Academic All-MAC honorable mention distinction awarded in previous years. Taking place of the Academic All-MAC accolade is the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honor, which will be announced later this year. To qualify for this year's Academic All-MAC team, a student-athlete must hold a grade point average of at least 3.20. Also, the student-athlete needs to have played in at least 50 percent of the season's contest. Freshman and incoming transfers are not eligible for the accolade.
A redshirt freshman, Nason adds another award to a stellar season. The Brooklin, Ontario product led the Eagles in goals and points in her first season on the pitch. Starting 16 matches and appearing in 18 overall, Nason recorded a team-high seven goals while putting 18-of-36 shots on frame. Nason was named MAC Women's Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 8), MAC Scholar Athlete honors (Sept. 9). She also earned a spot on the MAC All-Freshman team and is one of just 11 MAC women's soccer players to boast a perfect 4.00 grade point average.
A junior midfielder for the Eagles, Barcelos appeared in 17 matches for the Green and White. Starting two times for the Eagles in 2015, Barcelos put 4-of-9 shots on goal while averaging 26.5 minutes per match. Fellow classmate and midfielder, Mancini also made the list. Playing in 18 matches with six starts under her belt, Mancni scored the first goal of her career against Akron, Oct. 4.
Four other juniors represented the Eagles on the list in Bentley, Hirsch, Rollins, and Tillar. Bentley played in all 19 matches for the Eagles, starting 17 of them at outside back while registering an assist. Hirsch also played in every match for the Eagles, earning the starting nod in 16. The Troy, Mich. native recorded two goals and one assist for a total of five points while putting 11-of-29 shots on frame. Rollins produced the best season in her career, with her best performances coming in league play. Playing in every match for the Green and White, Rollins tallied three goals for a total of six points, including a game-winner while putting 10-of-16 shots on goal. Rounding out the juniors is Tillar. The Cincinnati, Ohio product totaled three points on the season with one goal and one assist to her credit.
Rounding out the Eagles selections were all five seniors on the 2015 squad. A stout center back, Kansman patrolled the backline while helping the Eagles to a pair of shutouts while starting every match. Kansman also netted a goal in the Eagles' conference opener against Ball State. Fellow defenseman, Lombardi added an assist and her first career goal as an outside back for the Eagles. Lombardi averaged 81.3 minutes per match while earning the starting nod 17 times in her final season.
McCabe split time in goal in her senior season, making 36 saves over 10 matches, including a shutout of MAC foe, Central Michigan.
Trapp saw action in every game, starting 18 matches. Trapp registered two goals on the season while adding an assist for a total of four points. She placed 14 of a team-high 40 shots on goal. Trapp's game-winner against Loyola-Chicago (Aug. 30) gave the Eagles a 1-nil win and landed her on the Loyola Invitational All-Tournament team.
Captaining the Eagles 2015 squad alongside McCabe, Oddan played in every match for the Eagles. Gracing the starting lineup 18 times, Oddan scored a goal while putting 14-of-31 shots on goal.
The Eagles season came to a close, Oct. 29, against Bowling Green State University. EMU finished the season with a 5-11-3 overall record and 2-8-2 mark in conference play.
