EMU Soccer Draws Even with CMU in Double-Overtime

10/9/2015 8:48:00 PM | Soccer

Senior Megan McCabe recorded the 14th shutout of her career in the draw

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan soccer team (4-7-2; 1-3-1 MAC) withstood a fury of shots by Central Michigan University (3-7-2; 2-2-1 MAC), escaping the CMU Soccer Complex with a scoreless draw, Friday, Oct. 9. Senior Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) made a season-high nine saves on her way to recording her 14th career shutout, in her first start in two weeks.

Testing the Chippewas' goalkeeper early, EMU seniors Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) and Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) put shots on frame but CMU's Zoie Reed secured the saves in the early minutes.

While the Eagles continued to test Reed, the Central Michigan strikers fired a trio of shots at McCabe in the closing minutes of the first half but the senior keeper held steady. Despite the late opportunities by the Chippewas, EMU held a 6-5 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes of play.

Scoreless through the first half, the Green and White mustered three shots in the second half, putting just one on frame. Struggling to find scoring chances on attack, the Eagles spent a majority of the half on defense while Central Michigan fired off 12 shots. McCabe and the EMU defense held strong, with key blocks by senior Hallee Kansman (North Farmington, Mich.-Farmington Hills) and junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and stellar saves by McCabe, forcing overtime.

The Chippewas held the upperhand in scoring chances in extra time, with their best opportunity coming in the final minute of the first overtime. Eliza Van de Kerkhove put a shot on frame in the final seconds of the period but a last second save by an EMU defender kept the shot from finding the back of the net.

EMU outshot the Chippewas 2-1 in the second overtime but the first shot was blocked while the second shot sailed wide. Moments after Oddan's shot was blocked, Madison Pogarch delivered a shot on frame but McCabe denied the Chippewas' attempt. Eastern registered the last shot of the match in the 109th minute of play, sailing a shot wide of goal, ending the match in a draw, 0-0.

The Eagles continue their four-game road trip, Sunday, Oct. 11, in Toledo, Ohio with a MAC matchup with the University of Toledo. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
