Senior Megan McCabe registerd five saves in the game
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Closing out the third weekend of Mid-American Conference play, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team traveled to Toledo, Ohio for a MAC West Division tilt with the University of Toledo (6-9-0; 2-4 MAC). Senior Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) tallied five saves but the Eagles' (4-8-2; 1-4-1 MAC) strikers were shutout as the Green and White fell 1-0.
While McCabe and the Eagles defense denied a series of shots by the Rockets, the Eagles' best scoring chances came courtesy of free kicks. Junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) stepped to the ball for a free kick five yards outside the 18 following a foul by Toledo in the 30th minute. Square in front of goal with a four-man wall in between, Hirsch lifted a shot past the wall but into the arms of Toledo keeper, Katie Wilson.
In the 41st minute, senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) found herself in the same position as Hirsch had been minutes earlier. Clearing the wall, Oddan's shot was right at Wilson's chest, allowing the Rockets keeper to secure the save.
Scoreless at the half, the Rockets came out firing in the second frame, outshooting the Eagles 11-2 in the final 45 minutes of play.
A missed mark in transition allowed Toledo's Brooke Maletic a clear passing lane to Kiersten Johnson in front of the Rockets' bench on a counter. With one touch, Johnson moved closer to goal taking McCabe one-on-one. The senior keeper held strong, shutting down the near post but Johnson delivered a shot to the far post out of McCabe's reach to put the Rockets in front 1-0 in the 70th minute.
Eastern Michigan mustered few opportunities in the final 20 minutes of play, falling on the road, 1-0. With the loss, the Eagles close out the weekend 0-1-1 through the first two games of their four-game road trip.
The Eagles continue play in the state of Ohio, Friday, Oct. 16, versus Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The match is set to start at 4 p.m.
