Three different players scored to lead the Eagles to a crucial conference win

Postgame Interview with Head Coach Scott Hall

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team opened week four of Mid-American Conference play with a 3-1 victory over Ohio University, Friday, Oct. 16, at Chessa Field. Juniors Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) and Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), as well as redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) scored goals for the Green and White while freshman Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) registered seven saves in the win.

Hirsch opened the game, scoring in the third minute to give the Eagles an early edge. Collecting a deflection off an Ohio defender, Hirsch buried a shot past the Bobcats' goalkeeper.

EMU's lead was short-lived as the Bobcats responded in the ninth minute to level the score at one. Ohio's Carly Manson left a pass for Mollie Whitacre who slipped a shot to the right of a diving Williams.

The pair of early goals served as the only goals of the half as the teams were deadlocked at one at halftime.

After combining for 17 shots in the first 45 minutes of play, the teams continued to blast shots at goal.. Fortunately for the Eagles, strong play in the midfield by senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial), freshman Mikayla Cupp (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego), redshirt junior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin), senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) and Hirsch allowed the Green and White to possess the ball and take pressure off of Williams and the Eagles' backline.

The stout defensive effort by the veteran cohort was balanced by aggressive play by the Eagles' strikers. Rollins notched her second goal of the season in the 55th minute, receiving a pass from Lombardi inside the 18 and rocketing it into the back of the net.

Rollins' goal served as the game-winner but Nason added an insurance goal late to put the game out of reach for Ohio. Ripping a shot from a few yards out, Nason's brace nicked the crossbar and shot straight up in the air. Coming down with incredible spin, Nason's shot and ricocheted into the back of the net, giving EMU a 3-1 lead in the 76th minute.

In the closing minutes, Ohio attempted a comeback but a pair of saves by Williams kept the score in favor of the Green and White, securing Eastern Michigan's second league win this season.

With the win, the Eagles move to 2-4-1 in MAC play with seven points to their credit as postseason nears. Heading into this weekend, the Eagles trailed a number of teams tied with six points, adding to the importance of Friday's win.

The Eagles close out their four-game road trip in Kent, Ohio, Sunday, Oct. 18, against Kent State. Eastern Michigan's battle with the Golden Flashes is set to start at 1 p.m. at Zoeller Field.
