The Green and White will attempt to win their sixth consecutive conference championship
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Following a successful regular season, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team is gearing up to defend their Mid-American Conference title at the 2015 MAC Championships, Saturday, Oct. 31, in Canton, Ohio. The Eagles, winners of five straight conference championships, look to take their sixth in a row, which would break the school record for consecutive titles.
At the 2014 MAC Championships, the Eagles turned in a performance for the record books, as the Green and White scored a record-low 23 points as a team by placing five harriers within the top-10, as well as three in the top-five. Senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) was the first harrier to cross the finish line, becoming the 15th Eagle to earn the title of MAC Champion. Including Fink, the Green and White return their top four runners from last year's squad. The team will rely heavily on the championship experience and depth provided by sophomore Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), redshirt sophomore Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge), and junior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason). Fink, Bouchikhi, Andresson, and Raymond were all recipients of All-MAC First Team honors for their performances in the 2014 title race, as they placed first, second, fifth, and seventh, respectively.
Head Coach John Goodridge has already won MAC Coach of the Year nine times, and will look to break into the double digits this weekend. Additionally, the winningest coach in MAC history will look to lead his squad to their 20th conference title in program history, which would tie Miami's record of 20 MAC Championships. When speaking of the upcoming race, he kept it short and sweet, stating " The guys are looking forward to Saturday. Our training has continued to progress and improve since our last race two weeks ago."
The men's race will be an 8,000-meter race, and is set to begin at 11 a.m. in the Canton GlenOak Community Park. More information on the event can be found by clicking here.
