YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team battled Northern Illinois through double-overtime in Mid-American Conference action, Sunday, Oct. 25, at Scicluna Field, playing to a 1-1 draw. Redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) recorded her seventh goal of the season while freshman Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) registered three saves in the tie.
The Huskies (3-12-2; 2-6-2 MAC) scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Working on a counter, Northern Illinois played a ball over the top to Nicole Gobbo who broke through the Eagles (5-10-3; 2-6-2 MAC) backline and lifted a shot into the upper-90 of the near post to give NIU the early edge.
It appeared as though the Eagles would answers moments later, garnering a corner kick in the eighth minute. Junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) trotted to the corner flag before delivering a well-placed cross into the box. Washburn's boot connected with senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) who headed the ball on frame but Trapp's flick was saved by a NIU defender. The save deflected out to senior Hallee Kansman (Farmington Hills. Mich.-North Farmington), who's follow-up shot was blocked. Registering the Eagles' third opportunity off the corner, Nason fired a shot to the near post but a diving save by Amy Annala left the Eagles trailing by one.
One minute after redshirt junior Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London) put a shot on frame, junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) took control of the ball in the midfield. Slicing through the Huskies' midfield, Hirsch played a ball into the box for Nason. Taking one touch to settle the pass, Nason fired a shot on frame but another diving save by Annala kept the Eagles from finding the equalizer.
After countless opportunities by the Green and White strikers, Northern Illinois had an opportunity to counter in the 20th minute. Earning a free kick a few yards outside the 18, the Huskies shot was stopped by Williams.
Firing off a number of shots and creating several opportunities, the Eagles continued to test the NIU defense. Eastern Michigan's persistence paid off in the final minute of the half. Stepping to the corner flag for EMU's third corner of the half, Washburn delivered a cross to the far post where Hirsch fired a shot. The initial shot was deflected to the feet of Nason who quickly ripped a shot into the back of the net, evening the score at one.
Coming out of the half with plenty of momentum, the Eagles erupted for 11 shots in the second half, two of which came in the 81st minute. Senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) eluded a few NIU defenders before ripping a shot off the crossbar. Nason corralled the rebound and took advantage of a shooting window, but another diving save by NIU's keeper preserved the tie.
The Eagles rattled off a number of shots in the closing minutes of regulation but could not find the go-ahead goal as the match went to overtime. Scoreless through the first extra period, the teams headed to double overtime. While each team recorded four shots in extra time, neither squad could tally the game-winner as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Sunday's match served as senior day for the Eagles as the Green and White celebrated the careers of Megan McCabe, Hallee Kansman, Chelsie Oddan, Julia Lombardi, and Megan Trapp. Together the group of five has compiled a 39-31-7 overall record while boasting a 25-12-3 mark in conference play. Combining for 54 points offensively, the senior class has fueled the Eagles to 19 shutouts.
With the draw, the Eagles sit at the bottom of the MAC West Standings, tied with Northern Illinois. Holding nine points in league play, the Eagles' playoff hopes hinge on a number of factors playing out as well as the Green and White helping their own cause when they return to the pitch, Thursday, Oct. 29, versus Bowling Green. The match with the Falcons is slated for 3 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
