Eagles' Season Comes to a Close Against Bowling Green

10/29/2015 5:21:00 PM | Soccer

With the loss, the Eagles were eliminated from the postseason

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team saw the book close on it's 2015 season, Thursday, Oct. 29, at Scicluna Field. The Eagles (5-11-2; 2-7-2) were handed a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mid-American Conference foe, Bowling Green State University at Scicluna Field. Junior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) recorded her third goal of the season as the lone goal scorer for the Green and White.

A fast-paced tempo on top was balanced by strong play in the midfield and defense. Senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) and freshman Mikayla Cupp (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) anchored the defensive midfield, settling the ball when needed and stepping for stout defensive tackles. After senior Hallee Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) left the match in the early going, freshman Mackenzie Etienne (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and redshirt freshman Olivia Kitz (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) stepped in and made outstanding plays at centerback.

Bowling Green spent a majority of the opening 15 minutes on it's heels as the Eagles erupted for 10 shots early. Despite the constant firepower, the Eagles shots were sent high and wide of frame, leaving the attack with nothing to show for their high-powered efforts.

While the Eagles continued their pressure of the Bowling Green defense, a counter gave the Falcons life at the other end of the pitch. Getting beat to the end line, an EMU defender blocked a service, resulting in a corner kick for Bowling Green. Juli Knapp stepped to the flag, delivering a cross to the far post but the initial shot was deflected to the middle of the six. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Skylar Fleak found the ball at her feet and pushed a shot into the back of the net, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.

Fleak's goal served as the lone tally of the half as the teams trotted off the field at the half with the score 1-0 in favor of Bowling Green.

Like the first half, the Eagles wasted little time taking it to the Falcons in the second frame. Junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy), redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson), junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), and senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) all put shots on goal but failed to bury the equalizer.

The Eagles ended the scoring drought in the 61st minute, courtesty of Rollins. Settling a ball at the top of the 18, Rollins spinned around a few Falcons and fired a shot into the back of the net, leveling the score at one.

Momentum seemingly swung in favor of the Eagles following Rollins' strike but only momentarily as Bowling Green scored in the 64th minute to take a 2-1 lead.

Over the remaining 26 minutes, the Green and White threw everything they had at the Falcons, including freshman goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka). Earning a corner with less than three minutes to play, the Eagles sent Williams and nine others into the box but came up empty.

With a season-high 31 shots in the match, the Eagles topped their previous season-high of 29 which they recorded, Sept. 20, in a 2-1 win over Green Bay. The total marks the highest for the Eagles since the 2011 campaign, when EMU defeated Buffalo, 5-1.

Eastern Michigan registered a season-high 31 shots in the match but put just nine on frame as the Eagles fell 2-1. With the loss, the season comes to a close for EMU as the Green and White finished outside the top-eight in the conference with an overall mark of 5-11-2.
