Freshman Kaylin Williams registered seven saves in the loss

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Fighting for a spot in the postseason, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team opened a three-game homestand against rival Western Michigan University, Friday, Oct. 23, at Scicluna Field. Continuing Mid-American Conference play, the Eagles (5-10-2; 2-6-1) were handed a 1-0 setback despite seven saves by freshman Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka).

Outshot 10-6 in the first half, the Eagles put three shots on frame in the first 45 minutes of play. Junior Stef Barcelos (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus) collected a deflection and directed a shot on target but Western Michigan (10-3-3; 7-1-1 MAC) goalkeeper, Stephanie Heber, corralled the save. The shot on frame served as the best scoring chance of the half for the Eagles as the teams entered the break deadlocked at zero.

Minutes into the second half, redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) beat her mark and dribbled towards goal. Working just inside the 18, Nason fired a shot on frame but a last ditch punch by Heber sent the ball out for an EMU corner.

Junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) served a corner into the box, connecting with redshirt senior Hallee Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) but the header hooked wide. The opportunity manufactured by the corner kick served as the last solid scoring chance of the match for the Eagles and set the Broncos up on the counter.

Moving downfield after clearing Kansman's header, Western Michigan's Alyssa Smith dribbled towards the goal line. Rather than take a deflection for a corner kick, Smith delivered a cross to the far post. Breaking through the box, Alex Ruffer challenged Williams for the ball, ultimately winning the battle and heading the ball into the back of the net. The goal lifted Western Michigan to a 1-0 edge in the 57th minute.

Holding a one goal lead, the Broncos defense packed it in, leaving few opportunities for the Eagles in the closing 30 minutes. Adding an extra striker to the mix late in the match, the Green and White could not break through the Broncos backline, eventually falling, 1-0.

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 2-6-1 in conference play with two games left on the slate. Currently sitting outside the playoff picture, the Green and White need to close out the season with a pair of wins to have a chance at extending their season.

The Eagles continue their three-game home stand, Sunday, Oct. 25, against Northern Illinois. The MAC clash marks senior day for five Eastern Michigan seniors, with a ceremony set to be held during halftime. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
