CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced Monday, Jan. 5, that five members of Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team were named to the Academic All-MAC team. Central Michigan topped the conference with eight selections, followed by Akron, Bowling Green, and Miami (7); Buffalo and Kent State (6); EMU; Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan (4); and Ball State and Northern Illinois (3).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
The five Eagles that earned the accolade included: Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)), Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University), Rebecca Quaintance (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), and Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42).
Frauhammer ran in eight meets for the Eagles, earning her highest finish at the George Dales Invitational, Sept. 12, placing eighth in 22:47.00. The junior earned two other top-30 finishes throughout the 2014 campaign, and went on to take 33rd at the MAC Championship in 21:55.00, Nov. 1. She holds a 3.74 GPA in dietetics.
Knoll finished her senior season with three top-30 finishes, her best coming at the George Dales Invitational in 22:23.00 for sixth. The Warren, Mich. native placed 23rd at the MAC Championship in 21:35.00, and maintains a 3.31 GPA in psychology.
A management major with a 3.85 GPA, Manjon-Rivadulla completed her senior season by competing in seven races for the Green and White. Her best finish was also at the George Dales Invitational, finishing 11th in 23:06.00. The Spanish native nabbed two other top-50 finishes, including a time of 22:13.00 at the MAC Championship, which was good for 39th.
Quaintance ran in six races as a junior, earning her best finish in 23:45.00 for 17th at the George Dales Invitational. The Commerce, Mich. native earned another top-30 finish at the Toledo Home Opener, Aug. 29, in 19:30.90. Quaintance holds a 3.53 GPA in general business.
One of the most prolific runners in EMU history, Voronko had a remarkable senior season while maintaining a 3.74 GPA in physical education. The Russian harrier was crowned the 2014 MAC Champion in a record-breaking 20:21.00, and also won the Toledo Home Opener and George Dales Invitational. Voronko finished in the top-10 in every meet leading up to the NCAA Championship, Nov. 22, and was the top finisher from the MAC at both the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 14, and the national championship. For her performances, she earned the MAC Runner of the Week award for every one of her regular season races (Sept. 4, Sept. 16, Sept. 30, Oct. 7, Oct. 21), and was also named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week on Nov. 19 after her 10th-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
The cross country season has come to a close, but the Eagle harriers will continue the year on the track for the 2015 campaign. Eastern's women's track and field team ring in the new year this Friday, when it hosts the EMU Triangular, Jan. 9 at Bowen Field House.
