Men's track and field looks for more improvement in second meet of the season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — After opening up the 2014-15 season at home with a pair of record-breaking performances and multiple personal records, Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team has already shown that it is a formidable contender for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship crown.  The team will continue along the road to the MAC Championships when it makes the short trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Harvey Invitational Saturday, Jan. 17.

Eastern had a strong start to its season at the EMU Quadrangular, Jan. 9, with notable performances from Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) and Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) in a pair of record-breaking field event victories.  Jones threw 20.25 meters/66 feet 5.25-inches in the weight throw to break a 17-year old record previously held by Dave Seaborne, while Scott broke his own record in the triple jump by nearly two feet, leaping 16.34 meters/53 feet 7.50-inches.  Scott also landed on the all-time top-10 list in the long jump, as his jump of 7.37 meters/24 feet 2.25-inches was good for eighth in program history.

Saturday also marked the dedication of the newly unveiled top-10 boards inside Bowen Field House.  Head Coach John Goodridge, along with women's track and field Head Coach Sue Parks held a special ceremony to honor Doug Tompkins, a dedicated alumnus who has maintained EMU's all-time lists for decades.  Tompkins was given a plaque commending his work for the Eagles, and the top-10 boards were dedicated in his honor at the beginning of the EMU Quadrangular.

The Harvey Invitational is held annually at the University of Michigan in honor of Jack Harvey, who led the Wolverine track and  field team for 25 seasons from 1975-1999.  Included in the day's athletic events will also be the induction of five former Michigan student-athletes to the U-M Women's Track and Field Hall of Fame.

The meet will be held inside U-M's Indoor Track Building, and will kick off with the field events at 10:30 a.m., while the track events will begin at 2:30 p.m.  The women's events will be contested first, followed by the men.
