Women's cross country will race in the Battle in Beantown
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team will take flight to the East Coast for a Friday meet in Jamaica Plain, Mass. The Green and White will compete in the Battle in Beantown, hosted by Boston College, Sept. 26 at Franklin Park.
The competition should prove to be a true test for the Eagles, as the meet will feature six nationally-ranked teams and a myriad of regional powerhouses. In addition to the host school, No. 17 Boston College, the Battle in Beantown will also feature athletes from No. 1 Michigan, No. 5 Georgetown, No. 15 Syracuse, No. 18 Providence, and No. 25 Dartmouth. Also included in the 21-team field are: Connecticut, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Fordham, Hartford, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Lipscomb, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Rhode Island, and Stony Brook.
Head Coach Sue Parks's squad has been in good form throughout the beginning of the 2014 campaign, picking up a win at the George Dales Invitational, Sept. 12, and a runner-up finish at the Toledo Home Opener, Aug. 29. In both races, senior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) won with commanding leads, earning her Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week honors for each performance. The team has also seen strong running from newcomers Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) and Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven), who have been the second and third scorers for the team not far behind Voronko.
The 5,000-meter race is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start time, followed by a men's 8,000-meter run at 3:30 p.m.
