JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team turned in an 11th-place finish in a field led by national powerhouses, amassing 267 points from its top runners at the Coast to Coast Battle in Beantown, Sept. 26.
Leading the way once again for the squad was senior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42). The Russian native took seventh out of over 200 harriers, crossing the line in 17:14.00 to clinch the edge over Michigan's Brook Handler. Hometown favorite Liv Westphal of Boston College took the overall title, followed by Michigan's Erin Finn, both of whom finished in the top-30 at the 2013 NCAA Championships. No. 1 Michigan took the overall team title, scoring 55 points for a considerable margin over Georgetown.
Eastern's second and third scorers followed closely after one another, led by Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) in 17:40.00 for 25th place. Crossing the line three seconds after Gallein was Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison), who took 28th.
The Green and White saw a gap in its finishers before the pair of Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) and Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University) finished nearly at the same time, with Knoll notching a mark of 18:49.00 while Manjon-Rivadulla found her finish at 18:50.00.
Two more pairs of Eagles crossed the line together to complete the race. At the 19:10.00 mark, Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline) led freshman Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich.-Seaholm), and the Hoosier State duo of Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) and Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind.-Fremont) had identical times at 19:29.00.
The Eagles will not have much time off before their next competition, as they will head to South Bend, Ind. for the highly-regarded Notre Dame Invitational. The meet will feature a multitude of races that will kick off at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3.
