Women's Golf Opens the Season at the Mary Fossum Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team kicks off its 2014 fall campaign, Sept. 13-14, when it travels to East Lansing, Mich. for the 31st Annual Mary Fossum Invitational. The course will be set up as a par-72, playing to the distance of 6,236 yards at the Forest Akers West Golf Course.
The event marks the fourth-consecutive year that the Green and White has opened up its season in East Lansing and the seventh-straight year that the Eagles have competed in the invitational. EMU's best finish came in the 2011-12 season when the team took eighth overall, shooting a 942 (304-317-321), while the Eagles finished 10th during the 2013-14 campaign, carding a three-round score of 934 (311-309-314).
The event will feature a 15-team field highlighted by five Mid-American Conference institutions and two Big Ten Conference teams. Teams competing in the 31st Annual Mary Fossum Invitational include: Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, East Tennessee State, Ferris State, Florida International, Grand Valley State, Houston, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oakland, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.
Last season, Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) carded a 79 on the final day of competition to finish tied for 41st with a 233 (76-78-79), while Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Lincoln) followed with a 237 (80-79-78).
The tournament will kick off Saturday, Sept. 13, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the first round with round two following immediately after. The Eagles will conclude the invitational Sunday, Sept. 14, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
