CARMEL, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – With 36-holes in the books at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team sits in fourth-place with a 584 (284-300). Kent State University leads the way after posting a six-under par 570 (286-284) on the par 72, 7,073 yard Prairie View Golf Club.

The Golden Flashes hold a five-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down three of the tournament's top nine slots. Akron is in second place with a 575 followed by Toledo (579), EMU, Ball State (590), Bowling Green (591), Miami (598), Ohio (603) and Northern Illinois (609).

Four of the five Eagles are ranked in the top 25, including junior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Nelson-Pfeiffer) who is tied for eighth-place with an even-par 144 (70-74). Senior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) managed a 145 (69-76) for 12th and sophomore Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) carded a 147 (71-76) for 18th-place. Rounding out the lineup, freshman Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) is tied for 25th after rounds of 76 and 74  while freshman Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) is tied for 33rd after an opening-day total of 153 (74-79).

Playing in overcast conditions with temperatures in the low-50s, KSU's Corey Conners and Akron's Charlie Bull paced the field after shooting a five-under 139.

EMU was tied with Akron for the top-spot on the leaderboard with an opening round 284. The Green and White fired 15 birdies along with picking up an eagle by White on the par-five No. 3. The opening round score of four-under was the lowest the squad has recorded this season and the best since a first round mark of five-under 275 at the Windon Memorial, Oct. 16, 2011.

However, in the second round EMU struggled with constancy as the scoring conditions proved much tougher.

The third round of the 2014 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 7:50 a.m. Saturday, May 3, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, May 4, at 7:50 a.m. For live scoring, visit http://www.birdiefire.com.
