Eagles Sit in Third After First Day of MAC Championships

Keith Williams breaks EMU hammer throw record, Willy Fink wins 10,000m
Day One Results
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team completed its first day of action at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday, May 15. After the short slate of the opening day, the Eagles sit in third with 21 points, trailing the University of Akron (27) and Kent State University (22).
Competition began on a high note for the Green and White with the breaking of an EMU record. After setting the new program standard in his first appearance of the season at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational on March 28, Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) was able to add over seven feet onto his personal record in the hammer throw. The junior threw for a distance of 60.14 meters/197 feet 4-inches to take fourth in the event and become the first Eagle to break the 60-meter mark. Two more Eagles landed in the top-10 of the field, paced by Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky)'s throw of 53.53 meters/175 feet 7-inches for seventh place. Sweeping in for the 10th spot was Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) at 49.31 meters/161 feet 9-inches.
The Green and White had one more top-10 showing on the field thanks to a seventh-place finish in the pole vault from Dylan Stites (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake). The junior cleared 4.62 meters/15 feet 1.75-inch as the Eagles' sole representative in the event.
Three members of the squad started out their first day of the two-part decathlon, led by Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview) with 3,710 points. Waldron, along with Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community) set personal records in the long jump, high jump, and shot put in the opening five events. Waldron paced the Eagles in two events taking third with a distance of 6.80 meters/22 feet 3.75-inches in the long jump with clearing 1.99 meters/6 feet 6.25-inches for runner-up in the high jump. Selvig also had top-10 finishes in both events, leaping 6.71 meters/22 feet 0.25-inches for fifth in the long jump and claiming seventh in the high jump at 1.90 meters/6 feet 2.75-inches.
The leader in the other three events was Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley), who has 3,631 points at the end of the first day. The junior finished runner-up in both the 100m and 400m dash, clocking in at 11.08 and 50.43. Selvig took the third spot in the 400m at 50.81, while Waldron rounded out the group at fifth in 51.07. Ijah also took fifth in the shot put, throwing 12.79 meters/41 feet 11.50-inches, and was closely followed by Waldron's fifth-place showing at 12.63 meters/41 feet 5.25-inches. With the five events, Waldron has the fourth spot overall, followed by Ijah in fifth and Selvig in sixth.
Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) closed out the first day of competition on a high note, as he was the first Eagle of the meet to be crowned a MAC champion. The redshirt-freshman earned a victory in the 10,000m run when he finished over four seconds ahead of Miami's David Wing in 30:20.34. Also scoring for the Eagles was Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium), who took seventh at 30:38.87. Coming in at 31:14.64 was Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville), who took 11th in the final event of the day.
The second day of the MAC Championships will begin tomorrow, May 16, as the decathletes will complete their final five events starting at 10 a.m. Action will start with the 110m high hurdles, followed by the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500m run. The bulk of the day's slate will get underway at 1 p.m. with the javelin throw, followed by the 1500m semifinals at 1:20 p.m. Results will be available through timerhub.com and more information is available on mac-sports.com.
