ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team remains in third place after the second day of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 64 points, trailing the University at Buffalo by just two points while the University of Akron holds the lead with 78.
The second day of competition started out with the final five events of the decathlon. All three competitors earned a podium finish, led by Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) in fourth with 7,050 points and followed by Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community)'s fifth-place finish thanks to a personal-best 6,823-point effort. The group was rounded out by Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview) with a career-high 6,548 points for eighth. The group started out with the 110m hurdles, in which Ijah took fourth in 15.01 while Selvig finished sixth in 15.37 and Waldron completed his 10th-place showing in 16.33 seconds. The trio then went on to the discus throw, in which Ijah once again led the squad with a throw of 37.18 meters/122 feet. The group went 6-7-8 as Selvig threw 36.59 meters/120 feet and Waldron notched a distance of 34.43 meters/112 feet 11-inches. Moving on to the pole vault, all three set outdoor personal-bests, led by Selvig's fifth-place vault of 4.40 meters/14 feet 5.25-inches. Ijah took seventh at 4.30 meters/14 feet 1.25-inches and Waldron finished 10th at 3.60 meters/11 feet 9.75-inches. In the midst of the pole vault competition, Ijah went to compete in the open section of the javelin throw, in which he took seventh with a throw of 58.01 meters/190 feet 4-inches. He then competed in the event once more with the decathletes, taking third at 56.92 meters/186 feet 9-inches, while Waldron took seventh at 43.46 meters/142 feet 7-inches and Selvig followed at eighth with a throw of 42.88 meters/140 feet 8-inches. The athletes' grueling day finally reached its end at 4 p.m. with the 1500m run. Selvig led the pack in 4:52.87 for seventh, followed by Waldron, who shaved off nearly 20 seconds to take eighth in 4:55.02. Ijah was close behind in 4:58.26.
The qualifying heats on the track placed at least one Eagle in tomorrow's championship heats. Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) and Chris Scott (Holt, Mich.-Holt) both earned spots in the 100m and 200m finals, with Bolton leading the way in both preliminary rounds. The junior finished third in the 100m with a personal-best time of 10.58, while Scott took fourth in 10.77 seconds. In the 200m prelims, Bolton was runner-up in 21.16 seconds, followed by a PR by Scott in 21.27 for fifth. The duo was joined by Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), who finished eighth in 21.30 seconds. Brown also qualified for the final round of the 400m, in which he has the top seed after finishing in 46.91 seconds. Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis.-Bradford) just missed out on the championship heat, taking ninth in a personal best time of 48.26 seconds.
Two Eagles split qualifying times for the hurdles, as Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) finished third in the 110m hurdles at 14.43 and Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) bested his own personal record in the 400m hurdles for the third seed, crossing the line at 52.70.
The Green and White had a pair of exciting performances in the 800m run, as the pair of Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) and Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) claimed the first and second seeds going into tomorrow's championship heat. Kalinowski won the first section of the preliminaries in a personal record time of 1:49.74, while Bradley cut nearly two seconds off his career mark to take the second section in 1:50.19. The sophomore clinched a come-from-behind victory in exciting fashion, trailing the pack for the first 600 meters before making a final burst to propel him to the finish line.
A pair of athletes landed on the podium for the shot put, led by a personal record from Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville). The junior, who broke his own record in the hammer throw yesterday, took seventh with a throw of 16.24 meters/53 feet 3.50-inches. Joining Williams on the podium was Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central), who took eighth at 16.17 meters/53 feet 0.75-inches.
Action wrapped up on the field with the crowning of the second MAC champion of the meet. After entering the long jump with one of the lowest seeds, redshirt-junior Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) added over two feet and nine inches to his personal record to win the championship title at 7.57 meters/24 feet 10-inches. The current national leader in the triple jump, who will compete for his second gold medal of the meet tomorrow, earned a berth to the NCAA East Regional meet in the long jump while also recording the sixth-farthest jump in EMU history. Scott was joined on the podium by Brown, who took third with a personal-best jump of 7.26 meters/23 feet 10-inches.
The evening ended with a nailbiting 3000m steeplechase, in which Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey S.S.) recorded his best time of the season at 9:03.17, but was overtaken in a surprise victory by Akron's Daniel Zupan, who cut over 23 seconds off his time to claim the championship crown in 8:59.53. Also landing on the podium was Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee), who added a fifth-place finish in 9:05.56 to his list of MAC accolades after coming out the victor in last night's 10,000m run.
The final day of the MAC Championships will resume tomorrow, May 17, at 10:30 a.m., when Scott will look to claim his title in the triple jump. Events on the track will begin at 1:10 p.m. with the 4x100m relay. Live results will be available through timerhub.com and more information can be found at mac-sports.com.
