Eagles Rally to Force Extra Innings, But Ohio Walks Off With Victory

4/26/2014 6:37:00 PM | Baseball

Gill goes 3-for-3, including a game-tying two-RBI single in the ninth in the Saturday setback

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Trailing by five runs, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team rallied all the way back to force extra innings, but the Ohio University Bobcats used two hits to score the winning run in the 10th for a 7-6 decision Saturday afternoon, April 26, at Bob Wren Stadium. For the second straight game, the Eagles (14-26, 2-15 MAC) were able to find success at the plate in the ninth inning before OU (8-31, 4-13 MAC) came away with the Mid-American Conference victory.

EMU tallied six runs on 12 hits, including three from shortstop Marquise Gill, tying his career high. The sophomore reached base all five times he stepped up to the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks. Gill also provided the game-tying hit in the bottom of the ninth, a single to right field that scored two Eagles. Lee Longo and Sam Ott each recorded a pair of hits for the second consecutive game, while Dae Bowden collected two hits as well. Ott also knocked in two runs and walked twice throughout the contest. Eastern was patient for the entire game as the team combined to reach via the base on balls 11 times. However, the Eagles left 14 men on the base path.

Senior Paul Schaak started the first 5.1 innings of the game for the Green and White, allowing six run (five earned) on nine hits. Freshman Tyler Russell (0-2) pitched effectively out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings before allowing the game-winning run in the 10th to take the tough loss. The young right-hander tied his career-high of four strikeouts in the outing.

Ohio scored seven of its runs on 14 hits. Garrett Black proved to be an important factor in the series once again by notching the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th. Ty Black went 4-for-5 with three runs, while John Adryan tallied two hits with one being a RBI triple that plated three Bobcats. Freshman Corey Wells (1-1) kept EMU off the scoreboard in the extra inning to pick up the decision.

The Bobcats scored first in the bottom of the third, but Eastern answered with a run in the top of the fourth. Adam Dennison walked and proceeded to steal second base to give teammate Ty Gilmore a RBI opportunity. On the eighth pitch of the at bat, the EMU third baseman took advantage of the swipe with a double to left center, scoring Dennison. Despite the Eagles knotting the game at one run apiece, OU put up one run in the bottom half of the inning before crossing the plate four more times in the fifth to take a five-run lead, 6-1.

Eastern Michigan started its comeback in the sixth, chipping into the deficit with two runs. Three singles loaded the bases with just two outs in the inning. Keeping up with the trend, Ott singled to right field to score Bowden and Gilmore. John Rubino followed with a walk to load the bases, but all three Eagles on the bags were left out to dry, keeping the game's margin at three.

After back-to-back walks in the eight, Rubino brought another run across on a base hit to center field. Once again, EMU loaded the bases full of Eagles, but could not get the runners in during the inning. Michael Mioduszewski made solid contact with the baseball, but it found the mitt of the OU right fielder, ending the threat.

Despite the missed opportunities to tie the game in the previous two innings, the Eagles continued to fight, and it paid off in the ninth. Two walks put the tying run on base, and Gill smacked a clutch two-out RBI single to keep the game going and cap off the five-run comeback. In the bottom half of the inning, Russell got out of a jam by leaving two Bobcats stranded and forcing the contest into extra innings.

Aside from a Longo single, the Eagles went quietly in the 10th. For Ohio's half of the inning, all four Bobcats reached base as the final base hit by Garrett Black scored Ty Black to end the game in favor of the host Bobcats.

EMU will look to avoid a series sweep by salvaging a victory in the Sunday, April 27, finale. Junior Jake Andrews will be on the hill for Head Coach Jay Alexander, while Ohio will give the ball to Connor Sitz. First pitch from Bob Wren Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
