UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) -- Playing as an individual, sophomore Josh Heinze (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) carded a three-round 215 (71-71-73) and tied for sixth at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on the par-71, 7,183-yard PSU Blue Course.
Heinze, whose previous best was a 26th-place finish at the 2013 Detroit Golf Club Invitational, pieced together rounds of 71,71 and 73, tops among EMU golfers. The two-day mark was five strokes better than his previous 54-hole low of 220 set earlier this season at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, Sept. 16-17, 2013.
The Eagles finished in sixth-place with a 881 (294-288-299) as the University of Minnesota ran away with the tournament title with a 860 (286-278-296). The Golden Gophers' Jose Mendez cruised to medalist honors with a six-under 207 (68-65-74).
Freshman Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) finished tied for 16th-place with a total of 220 (73-71-76) as classmate Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) managed a 220 (73-71-76) in a tie for 19th-place. Senior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) was just two strokes behind in a tie for 29th with a 222 (72-71-79). Junior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Nelson-Pfeiffer) added a 223 (76-73-74) while sophomore Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) completed the EMU lineup in a tie for 57th at 229 (78-73-78).
Eastern Michigan has a week off before traveling to Carmel, Ind. for the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 2-4, at the Prairie View Golf Club.
