UNIVERSITY Park, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – After firing an opening round 294 at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team turned in a 288 to finish the opening day with a cumulative score of 582 in a tie with Army for third place. The tournament is being hosted by Penn State University at the par-71, 7,183-yard PSU Blue Course.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Josh Heinze (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) led the Eagles with a score of even-par 142 (71-71). Heinze, who is tied for seventh, shot a 71 in round one and another 71 in round two. Senior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) is tied for ninth with a 142 (72-71). Freshman Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) finished the day with a 144 (74-71) while junior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Nelson-Pfeiffer) notched scores of 76 and 73 for 45th-place at 149. Rounding out the lineup, Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) is tied for 55th with a 36-hole tally of 151 (78-73)
Minnesota sits atop the leader board with a two-round score of six-under 564 (286-278). Rutgers is in second place with a 573 (289-284) followed by EMU, Army and Bowling Green (287-295=582). Jose Mendez of Minnesota of Penn State leads the tournament with a score of nine-under par 133. Mendez used a tournament-low round of 65 in round two after posting a 68 to open the day.
Tomorrow's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
