Senior pole vaulter finishes his senior indoor season among nation's best
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team senior Max Babits (Howell, Mich.-Fowlerville) has been selected to compete in the 2014 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Babits has had one of the most successful pole vaulting careers in EMU history, breaking the school record in the event twice this year. On Jan. 10, Babits cleared a height of 17 feet 9-inches at the EMU Triangular to break his own record set in the 2012-13 season. The Howell, Mich. native then became part of an elite group when he cleared 18 feet 1-inch at the Hillsdale Tune-Up Meet, Feb. 22, to go down in history as the first Eagle to clear the 18-foot mark. He went on to finish runner-up at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships , Feb. 28-March 1, behind Akron's Shawn Barber, as the two will be the sole representatives from the conference in the event at the NCAA Championships.
"My assistants and I, as well as teammates and alums, are all very proud and happy for Max," said Head Coach John Goodridge. "He has established himself as one of the top collegiate pole vaulters in the nation and due to his efforts and his coaches, EMU will be represented at the NCAA Championships."
Currently ranked sixth in the nation, Babits is one of just eight pole vaulters in the NCAA that has cleared 18 feet this season. He will look to continue at an exceptional level Saturday, March 15. The pole vault is set to start at 5:30 p.m. MDT.
