Murphy Tied for 10th After First Day of Jim West Challenge

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (EMUEagles.com) -- After a three month layoff, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team returned to the links and kicked off the 2014 spring season Monday, Feb. 17, here at the Jim West Challenge on the par 71, 6,178-yard Bandit Golf Club course. The Eagles are in eighth place after the first day of action with a team score of 630 (311-319).
The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Texas State University, features 15 schools. Gonzaga holds a nine-stroke edge on the leaderboard with a 591 (285-306) ahead of host Texas State University in second with a 600 (300-300).
Eastern Michigan was led by a 152 (75-77) from freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth), which puts her in a tie for 10th. Junior Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) is tied for 21th with a 155 (79-76), while senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) returned after miss the final three tournaments of the fall to tie for 31st with after carding a 158 (78-80).
Redshirt-junior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) managed a 165 (79-86), while redshirt-sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) tallied a 175 (88-87).
Gonzaga's Cierra Min sit as the individual lead through two rounds at one-over par 143 (72-71).
Teams will conclude play 8 a.m. CT Tuesday, Feb. 17, with the final 18 holes of the tournament.
