Women's Golf Ties for Eighth at the Jim West Challenge

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team remained in eighth place as it completed the final round of the Jim West Challenge, Feb. 18, on the par 71, 6,178-yard Bandit Golf Club course. The Eagles shot a three-round total of 942 (311-319-312) to finish in a tie for eighth with Boise State.
Leading after day one, Gonzaga held on to win the tournament, posting an 878 (285-306-287). Host Texas State finished eight strokes behind the tournament champion (300-300-286=886) to finish runner-up.
Junior Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) shot a final round six-over par 77 to lead the Eagles on the day as well as for the tournament, tying for 20th with a 232 (79-76-77). Fellow Eagle Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) recorded a 77 as well to tied with Williams for the lowest EMU round of the day, and the redshirt-junior finished the tournament at 242 (79-86-77).
EMU senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) and freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) tied with 35th individually as both golfers carded a 236. Murphy was tied for 10th after the first two rounds that totaled 152 (75-77), but she struggled to a final day score of 84. Meanwhile, Crossan notched a pair of 78s in between her second round 80 to get to her 236 three-day total.
Redshirt-sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) wrapped up the Eagles' final round score with an 80, finishing with a 54-hole total of 255 (88-87-80).
Gonzaga's Raychelle Santos fired a four-under 67 in the final round to claim medalist honors by two strokes (68-77-67=212), tackling the course at one-under through the three rounds.
The Eagles return to the links, Feb. 23-24, for the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz. hosted by Northern Arizona University.
