YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team secured a solid victory over Mid-American Conference opponents Central Michigan University and the University at Buffalo, Feb. 1.  The Eagles finished with 128.5 points, while the Chippewas claimed second with 89.5 points and the Bulls finished third with 70 points.

The Green and White won a total of nine events in the triangular meet, six of which came by way of the track athletes.  The distance and mid-distance events were claimed by an Eagle in each race, as Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) opened up the day's track events with a personal-best in the mile to claim the victory.  The sophomore set the pace at 4:11.11, finishing over four seconds ahead of CMU's Ethan Lievense.

Another personal-best was produced by Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville).  Leading the way for the majority of the 3000m run, Witchell found himself in a pack with newcomer Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium) and CMU's Nate Ghena.  In the final 50 meters of the race, the Williamston, Mich. native made a strong push toward the finish line to claim the race with an 8:24.40 mark, while Bouchikhi took second in 8:24.90.  In the 800m run, Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) controlled the field for the entire race, cruising in at 1:52.07.

Two more Eagles clinched winning times on the track, as Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) ran a scorching 21.47 in the 200m as he finished with ample distance ahead of Buffalo's Miles Lewis.  Rookie Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) ran his first 400m event donning the Green and White, finishing ahead of the competition with a 48.48 mark.  He also showed his value on the field, as the freshman won the long jump by nearly a foot as he leapt 23 feet 7.50-inches in the event.  Both events punched the freshman's ticket to the 2014 MAC Indoor Championship, Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

Along with Brown, 10 other athletes from the Green and White met or exceeded the MAC qualifying standard.  Bolton, Bouchikhi, Fink, Kalinowski, and Witchell all earned a spot in their respective events, while Max Babits (Howell, Mich.-Fowlerville), Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central), Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley), Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky), Javion Lee (Clinton, Miss.-Clinton), and Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) all earned scores that would ensure them a spot in the conference meet.

Babits took the pole vault by a large margin, topping the other competitors by nearly two feet with his vault of 17 feet 0.75-inches.  The senior and school record holder in the event attempted to clear 18 feet, and nearly did so in his final attempt but barely brought the bar down with him.  Had Babits succeeded, he would have broken his own record of 17 feet 9.00-inches set on Jan. 10 in the triangular meet against Detroit Mercy and Oakland.

Though the duo of Lindsey and Ijah did not come away with a win in the 60m hurdles, the pair came in 2-3 behind Renaldo Powell, who is one of the top hurdlers in the conference.  Both athletes notched personal-bests in the event while running a MAC standard time.

On the field, two throwers met qualifying standards and set personal-bests in their respective events, as Harris threw the shot put for a distance of 56 feet 07.50-inches and Jones launched the weight throw for 61 feet 2.00-inches.  Harris came in third behind All-American Jonathan Jones of Buffalo and CMU's Alex Rose.  Jones's performance was good for a runner-up finish behind Evan Palmer, the No. 13 weight thrower in the nation.

Rounding out the MAC qualifiers was Lee, who went 47 feet 9.25-inches in the long jump.  The freshman won the event by a distance of nearly four feet.

"We're very pleased as a staff that we had a solid competitive effort and there was certainly some very exciting competition.  As we all know, we have to get back to work and we have two really big meets coming up in the next few weeks," remarked Head Coach John Goodridge.  "When you compete against your conference fours in a scoring situation like this, it does certainly simulate the athletes you are going to be facing in the championships.  That can certainly be a positive experience, and I'm proud of the way our guys responded to that and I think they look really good."

The Eagles will head to South Bend, Ind. for a two-day meet at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 7-8.
