ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—A small group of harriers from Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team made the trip west to Grand Valley State University to compete in the 5000m run at the Laker Early Bird, Dec. 5.
Head Coach John Goodridge explained the purpose of Friday's competition. "This was a group exercise to run a 14:40.00," stated Coach Goodridge. "A few of the guys fell off pace in the late stage of the race, which is understandable for today, but this experience will help them in their next effort."
Eastern has shown its strength in distance events when running in a pack, as was evident in the capturing of this year's 2014 Mid-American Cross Country title and tying a record-low 23 points. Four Eagles were able to accomplish the goal set by Coach Goodridge, led by Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge (Alderson Broaddus)) in 14:39.72 for the premier finish in his collegiate debut. Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) rushed in just .16 seconds behind Andresson, followed by Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College) in an even tighter finish in 14:39.89. Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.-River Falls) was the fourth finisher in the race, crossing the line in 14:40.12. The Eagles completed a sweep of the first five finishes with Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville)'s mark of 14:49.61.
Also competing in their EMU debut meets on the track were Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason), John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y.-Gloversville), and Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio-River View (Wingate)). Raymond and Knox clinched two of the remaining top-10 spots, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively in under 15 minutes. Hammond took 11th overall, and was closely trailed by Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline) for 13th place.
The Eagles will refrain from competition for more than a month, when they will host the EMU Triangular alongside the women's team inside the friendly confines of Bowen Field House Friday, Jan. 9, 2015.
