Eagles recognized for success in the classroom with one of the MAC's highest team GPAs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as one of 188 programs to earn the organization's Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 academic year, Nov. 24. Out of the 188 teams honored, the Eagles' grade point average of 3.46 was the fourth-highest GPA in the Mid-American Conference.
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players. Eastern Michigan had 17 soccer student-athletes with grade points averages of 3.00 or better, including 16 of them above the 3.25 threshold.
"We expect our student-athletes to not only shine on the field, but in the classroom as well," commented EMU Head Soccer Coach Scott Hall. "Our coaching staff is proud of the hard work put in by the ladies in both soccer and academics. For the team to once again be recognized by the NSCAA is truly an honor."
While the NSCAA Team Academic Award is the first overall team accolade acknowledging academics for the 2014 MAC West Division champions, individual Eagles earned scholar-athlete honors throughout the 2014 campaign. Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) was named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 29, and two other Eagles were recognized towards the end of the season.
Senior Emily Dzik (Troy, Mich.-Troy) and junior Julia Lombardi (Oakville, Ontario-Queen Elizabeth Park) earned spots on the Capital One Academic All-District Five teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Oct. 30. Dzik was selected to the Academic All-District First Team while Lombardi collected Academic All-District Second Team accolades.
