EMU soccer senior Emily Dzik made first team, while Julia Lombardi was named to the second team
MCLEAN, Va. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University soccer student-athletes Emily Dzik (Troy, Mich.-Troy) and Julia Lombardi (Oakville, Ontario-Queen Elizabeth Park) have been recognized as Capital One Academic All-District honorees, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Oct. 30. Dzik was named to the 2014-15 All-District Five first team, while Lombardi earned second team accolades. With two Eagles on the academic all-district teams, Eastern Michigan has more than any other Mid-American Conference instiution.
The geographical region of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio makes up NCAA Division I District Five, from which 26 student-athletes comprise the two academic teams. The academic all-district teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the third year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian universities, and two-year schools.
Dzik, a nursing major with a 3.97 grade point average, earns the award for the second time in her career after being named to the second team as a junior. As a senior, Dzik has played in every minute of every game this season, totaling 1,564 minutes. Leading the Eagles as a co-captain, Dzik and the EMU backline have produced seven shutouts this yea en route to the Eagles winning 10-or-more games for the third-straight season. The Troy, Mich. native has also played a factor on the offensive side of the pitch as well, scoring two goals and recording a pair of assists throughout the 2014 campaign.
Lombardi boasts a 3.98 GPA as a biology and chemistry major, while serving as a solid foundation to the EMU backline all season long. The Oakville, Ontario native has appeared in 12 games, making nine starts for the Eagles' defense. Lombardi has been on the field in four Eastern clean sheets in which the Green and White has kept its opponent off the scoreboard. The junior defender is closing in on the 700-minute mark in time on the field this season as the Eagles look to capture the MAC West Division title for the second-consecutive year.
The Eagles close out the 2014 regular season today with a trip south, crossing the state border to battle the Bowling Green State University Falcons. The MAC cross-divisional matchup is set to begin at 3 p.m. A win over the Falcons would give EMU at least a share of the MAC West Division title as well as the No. 3 seed for a MAC Tournament quarterfinal game on Sunday, Nov. 2, that would take place at Scicluna Field.
