NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois University Sunday, Oct. 19, in the final round of match play at the Hoosier Fall Invitational at Purgatory Golf Club.
In the final matchup of the consolation bracket, EMU finished the weekend with a 3-2 victory over the Huskies. The match play victory was the first for the program as the squad will have another opportunity at the format later in the year at the MAC Match Play Tournament, Feb. 9-10, in Lakwood Ranch, Fla.
Redshirt-senior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) got the Eagles off to a quick start with a 5&3 victory over Connie Ellett. The EMU lead grew to 2-0 as freshman Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) defeated Sydney Brickey, 2&1. NIU was able to get on the board as Sam Coyne downed redshirt-junior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School), 2 up.
Sophomore Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and NIU's Lena Gautier needed to extend their battle beyond the 18th hole. In the end though, it was Gauiter escaping with the win on the 19th hole to knot the match at 2-2. Freshman Kylie Raines (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) responded for the Eagles to seal the team victory with a 2&1 victory over Taylor Ellett.
Illinois took home the team title with a 5-0 victory over Fresno State. Ball State ousted the host Hoosiers, 3-2, to take third place while Illinois State tied Boston College, 2.5-2.5, in the fifth-place match.
EMU entered the weekend as the No. 2 seed after an opening round 300, but dropped both matches yesterday to Ball State University, 4-1, and Illinois State University, 3-2.
