Women's cross country will be able to run the course of the 2014 NCAA Championships
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team will head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the annual Indiana State Pre-National Invitational, hosted by the site of the 2014 NCAA Championships, Indiana State University. The women will compete in the seeded Blue Race, which is set for an 11 a.m. start.
Head Coach Sue Parks's squad will see a different level of competition from last year, moving from the unseeded White Race to the seeded Blue Race for this season. Last year, Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) took second in 20:27.92. The senior has risen to the occasion this year when faced with highly-ranked opponents, taking seventh at the Battle of Beantown against six nationally-ranked programs and sixth at the Notre Dame Invitational Blue Race that featured 23 regionally-ranked teams with three in national standings.
The field for Saturday's meet is comprised of 43 teams, including: Arkansas State, No. 22 Baylor, Bradley, Butler, California, No. 7 Colorado, Colorado State, Connecticut, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Elon, Furman, No. 4 Georgetown, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Lamar, La Salle, Lipscomb, Loyola Marymount, Miami (Ohio), No. 1 Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana State, No. 29 North Carolina State, Northern Arizona, Northwestern, No. 3 Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Princeton, Purdue, Rice, Texas, Toledo, Tulsa, UC Davis, Utah, UT Arlington, Wichita State, Wyoming, and Yale.
All 43 teams are ranked in their respective regions, with four teams (Colorado, Georgetown, Michigan, and Oregon) at the top of the standings in their regions and five programs in the top-30 nationally. The Great Lakes Region is heavily represented, as Eastern Michigan holds the fourth highest ranking of the school competing on Saturday at ninth in the region, preceded by Michigan (first), Butler (sixth), and Toledo (seventh).
Action will kick off for the day with the Women's Blue Race at 11 a.m., followed by the elite Men's Blue Race at 11:35 a.m. A women's Open Race will be held at 1:30 p.m.
