TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—After moving from the unseeded White Race last season to the elite-level Women's Blue Race this year, Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team proved that it is a force to be reckoned with at the upcoming Mid-American Conference Championships, taking 18th out of 43 teams at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational, Oct. 18. The Eagles earned 522 points, as the team had the second-highest finish of a school from the Great Lakes Region behind only No. 1 Michigan's third-place turnout.
Senior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) did not disappoint in her performance, taking sixth out of 293 runners. The Russian native finished in 20:52.3, while the overall title was won by Rachel Johnson of Baylor. Of the athletes in the top-10 finishes, seven appeared in the 2013 NCAA Championships with three earning All-American accolades.
Following Voronko was Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) in 21:51.5. Her mark was good for 80th, and Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) was the last of three Eagles to grab a top-100 finish, crossing the line at 21:59.0 for 92nd.
Senior co-captain Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) just missed out on being one of the first 100 athletes to finish as she took 106h in 22:08.3, and Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University) was the fifth scorer for the Eagles in 23:08.4. Just 0.4 seconds behind Manjon-Rivadulla was Amy Frauhammer, and the final member of the Green and White to compete was Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich.-Seaholm) in 23:46.7.
Two Eagles competed in the Women's Open Race later in the afternoon. Rebecca Quaintance (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) took 51st in 24:03.2, not far ahead of Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) in 24:20.3 for 58th.
The Eagles will have one more meet before the 2014 MAC Championships as they will host the annual EMU Fall Classic. The meet is slated for a 4 p.m. start time Friday, Oct. 24, at Hudson Mills Metro Park in Dexter, Mich.
